Work was an every day struggle with being ordered and bossed around by Jasper. It got on my nerves how he would order me to do everything for him and to stop being 'pathetic and a twirp.' I guess I did sometimes deserve it though for slacking on the job.
My shift started at five a.m in the morning and lasted until one o'clock p.m. It was only a good eight hour shift but it involved driving, chasing down criminals, and getting constantly criticized by Jasper. Today for our shift we were strangely called to meet up at the department first and have something assigned to us by our boss.
If it is to replace me with someone else and put me on parking duty, I guess I shouldn't be surpised, I thought as I prepared for my shift, getting dressed into my uniform and locked my weapons and other supplies into my belt.
It wouldn't be a surprise at all. Jasper had complained to our boss multiple times in the past about me. He would tell Mrs. Diamond that I would always slack on the job, never stay focused and always too hesitant to chase after the criminals. I do have to say that I have caught a few that ran before...but not without Jasper's help.
The man was also supposed to pick me up that day in our squad car. As I opened my door to the front lawn, dressed and ready, my phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket. I groaned in annoyance and pulled my phone out, clicking it on and answered the call without checking who it was.
"Sweetie, how have you been?"
Great, I thought, swallowing back a growl of irritation. It was my mother's familiar voice, strained with worry. She had always called me every two days to check up on me, and it did seem to get quite annoying.
"Yes mom, I'm doing fine," I grumbled back as I walked down my front lawn.
As my mother rambled on about something, I zoned out when I spotted the familiar squad cat rolling down the road with Jasper driving. He pulled up at the edge of the road in front of my lawn, rolling down the window and motioning me over with his hand.
I snorted softly and began to walk over to the other side of the car. As I did, I snapped back to reality when my mother's voice grew louder and more anxious.
"Honey? Are you okay?"
"Yes mom, I am fine," I repeat in a icy cold tone as I open the door to the passenger side of the squad car and sit down in the seat. "Now, I've got to go to work."
"Well I love y-"
Before my mother could finish, I had already hung up and shut off my phone, shoving it back in my pocket. I groaned and leaned back as Jasper pulled back out onto the road, laughing silently.
"Damn Peridot, how come you can hang up on your mom but you can't take down a weak criminal," Jasper asked in a chuckle.
I clenched my teeth and folded my fingers into tight fists at Jasper's question. Sometimes I wanted to punch that Clod, but I knew most definitely that the tall boulder would win in the end. "I don't know," I just mumbled to answer with a shrug.
Jasper rose a brow at me when he glanced my way while driving. "I'm just joking with you, lighten up," He snapped.
I unfolded my fists and gripped the edges of the seat, rolling my eyes and looking out my window. "Whatever..just drive on," I mumbled.
Surprisingly, Jasper did not retort wirh a snarky comment not scream at me for being a downer. Instead, he drived on silently and began to slow the car down as we pulled into the parking lot of the department. The man backed the squad car up perfectly into a parking space and then instantly turned and pulled the keys out of the ignition.
"Let's just get this over with," Jasper growled lightly before opening his door and leaping out of the squad car.
I stared after him for a moment before opening my door and hopping out as well. I dusted off my uniform and positioned my glasses perfectly back in place. I then began to bring my fingers through my hair, making there was no remaining knots or any of the such. As I did so, Jasper was already stomping off towards the department's doors.
Usually Jasper would call for me to hurry up, but this time he headed through the doors and didn't even look back. Once finished, I scrambled swiftly after him, catching the door and slipping into the department behind Jasper.
It wasn't usually busy at this hour besides for a few people standing around. Most officers were already off and beginning their shift while Jasper and I had to report for a special assignment for us to recieve. I still wondered what it could be. Who would ever know, Mrs. Diamond had her surprises.
Jasper led me towards the back room to Mrs. Diamond's office. He froze in front of it and I did swiftly, almost knocking into Jasper since I was too busy staring at the pictures and decorations on the wall. Jasper lifted a hand and knocked on the door, Mrs. Diamond's voice immediately piping up and telling us to come in.
Jasper opened the door without hesitation, while my heart was pounding and my palms were sweating. Mrs. Diamond was usually sincere, but she always gave me a bad look and stated sarcastic comments on me. I stepped in alongside Jasper, standing in front of Mrs. Diamond's desk.
The woman was tall with broad shoulders and pointed cheeks. Her nose was sharp and her green eyes almost seems to be a yellow color. She wore her normal business suit and had her short, blonde hair pinned back. Her eyebrows furrowed at the sight of us and her hands reached into a shelf beside her.
"Mr. Quartz and Ms. Green, you have report to me as wished. Great, I have an important assignment for you both," Mrs. Diamond spoke up as she pulled out a folder from the shelf.
Mrs. Diamond laid down the folder in front of us and begin to speak. "Recently, we have two new criminals wandering the streets. Last time they were seen, they had both robbed a bank by the Big Donut. The taller one was fully masked and covered, but luckily our security camera's were able to catch the second one's face and identify her name."
Mrs. Diamond opened the folder up and Jasper and I leaned closer to examine the picture. The woman in the picture had round cheeks and bright, blue eyes. Her skin was white and her noise slightly pointed. Her short, messy hair was dyed a dark blue color, almost matching the color of her eyes. By her facial expression, she seemed to be beyond scared. This woman was a criminal? She didn't at all seen like one from the looks of it.
Jasper and I pulled back and Mrs. Diamond met our gaze for a second. "There is nothing known about where she lives or anything. It's almost as if she is erased from everything. All besides her name."
Mrs. Diamonds pointer finger landed above the name printed at the bottom of the taken picture in bold, black ink. The name that would remain a important aspect of my life since that very day.
"Her name is Lapis Lazuli, and your mission is to find her and lock her up."
