The Sad House At Night

I had told Violet that I was walking home with Oliver and that Willow would get a ride from one of her friends. The walk was pretty quiet, except for the birds that sang beautiful songs. I looked up the sky and tugged my backpack straps tightly. I even stopped to look at trees, but Oliver didn't realize until he was alone.

"You okay there?" He asked and scratched his neck. I smiled at the sky then looked at him, who was way ahead of me. He squinted his eyes with the sun shining on his face.

"Yeah, she just looks beautiful right now," I said and made him a bit confused.

"She?" He asked, still squinting and lifting his glasses.

"I like to think the sky's a girl, the sun's a woman, the moon's the sun's husband, and the stars are their children," I said.

"What about the planets?" He asked, he was interested.

"Oh, well they're just planets!" I laughed off and continued to walk. He looked up at the sky and smiled. I was ahead of him now.

"Come on, slacker! Stop staring at the sky, you're running me down!" I joked and giggled. Once I got near my house, it looked sad. A sad house, the sad house I live in. Oliver even shrugged just by looking at it.

"Okay, well this is me. I'll see you tomorrow?" I asked and he quickly nodded his head. I opened my front door and silence was the only thing I heard once I came in.

"Mom? Dad? I'm home!" I yelled, but there still was no answer. I then heard giggling. It came from outside. It was Willow, and she was with Anthony. They were outside, he was in his car and Willow was standing. She must've gotten a ride from him, I thought. She twirled her hair and couldn't stop smiling. Then they said goodbye and she was about to open the door, but I did it for her. She gasped when I did, but let out a sigh once she saw it was me.

"Shit Bella, you scared me!" She yelled and walked in. I rolled my eyes at her and shut the door, but I didn't let her leave.

"I need to talk to you. It's about Anthony." I said, and she scoffed.

"What? You're gonna tell me not to go near him because he's 'trouble'? How clichè." She said and rolled her eyes. I sucked my teeth and was about to say something, but Dad walked in.

"Hello, girls. How was school?" He asked and smiled, well kinda. His smile was half up, half down. It looked like a smile, but it also looked like he just swallowed a cockroach.

"Hi dad, bye dad!" Willow yelled and went up the stairs to her room. I half-smiled at him and also went up the stairs, there was nothing to tell him.

When ever I was in my room, I played music on my record player, wore comfy clothes, and read a good book, but tonight was not that night. I was currently on the phone will an upset Mariah. She was pissed that Rose was talking to Brandon about well, I don't know what, but she was pissed. Even if it was for no reason. But when was she not?

"I don't know why you're stressing over this small interaction, I thought you didn't like Brandon," I said on the phone and looked out the window next to my bed.

"I don't, I just hate that he talks to her and everything she does pisses me off!" She yelled and nearly made my ears bleed.

"So if she breathes, you'll trash talk her?"

"Yes," Mariah whispered and probably thought I didn't hear that.

"God, I have to head to bed. Are you gonna be fine?" I asked.

"Yeah, I'm gonna get drunk. Love ya." She said, and I could already hear her opening a cabinet where bottles clanged together.

"Love you too, bye." I whispered and hung up. I yawned and grabbed a journal underneath my bed. It made me smile for no reason. I opened the book and flipped through the pages. There was nothing written in it, and for some reason my brain decided to grab a pen and started writing.

In a sad house at night,

Mother holds me and whispers to me that she loves me,

Father comes in and grabs her to come to their bedroom,

I had been left alone, in the sad house at night. The monsters,

they held me down and kept me up at night.

As dad begins to hit mother and lets her screams come out to play.

I looked at journal and saw a tear drop on the book. No one could hear it, but I heard mom crying in the distance. A plate had shattered downstairs. Then another one. And another one. And another one. My door opened and I soon saw Willow come in with her pillow.

"Dad's acting up again." She whispered and crawled into my bed. I nodded my head and lifted my arms to hug her. No one outside heard what we heard, and that my friends, is a night at the Bakers' house. The Sad House At Night.
