I bet from his perspective he's loved you for years but he never thought for a second you guys would get together because of fear. He would never want the close friendship to fall apart, he wouldn't want to lose you.
Then I came along and he used me as a distraction kept me waiting for months because you were driving him crazy. He took you to prom the same day he saw me. All that went through his mind that night was you and how gorgeous you looked but he couldn't do anything about it, you're his best friend. Then his mind went back to me, he couldn't deal with me, knowing how I feel for him and how he feels for you. The only solution was distance. So he went distant, knowing what he has done and said. In the process he managed to lose my love, but he didn't care he got what he wanted, which was to gain you in the end.
