Chapter 2 : The Therapist; Friend or Foe?
As Kid's consciousness returned to him, he found himself on a chair. His head buzzed, and he raised his hand to his right temple. He winced; it hurt him. Suddenly, his memory returned. Stein had hit him with something hard. That wasn't something a professor should do to a student, let alone the son of a Shinigami!
"Oh, good. You're awake." Liz said, appearing in Kid's line of vision. "You need to be awake for this."
"Alright, Kid-kun. Now, what would be the problem today?" the therapist asked.
"Nothing! I'm perfectly normal! I shouldn't even be here!" Kid argued.
"He's lying! He needs serious help!" Liz yelled. "Don't act like you don't know what's wrong with him! You know he's got a serious problem!"
"Hm... I don't recall. Could you remind me?" he snickered.
"Come on, Sam." Professor Stein said. "Don't make Kid-kun even more uncomfortable."
"Oh, alright. Well, to defeat your OCD, we will make things asymmetrical, bit by bit. Soon enough--"
"YOU'RE A MONSTER! YOU CAN'T EXPECT ME TO LET YOU GO THROUGH WITH THIS, DO YOU?!" Kid shrieked.
"Kid, calm down! You need this!" Liz said, trying to convince him.
"NOOO!!! THIS IS THE END! I'VE GONE TO HELL!"
"Shut up!" Liz screamed.
"HEY, I CAN'T MOVE MY ARMS!" he yelled.
"Yes. I--" Stein started.
"Hey, Professor Steeeein!" Patty cheered. "Did ya stitch 'im to the chair?"
"I did..."
"What? You can't do that!" Kid was astounded.
"Hey, Stein, weapons, please leave the room." Dr. Sam commanded.
"We can't leave our meister! Especially not in your hands!" Liz argued.
"You must."
"I disagree." Stein said, adjusting his screw. "No matter how cheesy it may sound, Kid-kun needs as many familiar faces around him when the asymmetry causes a shock to his mind and body. His weapons are essential to him at this point."
"... As always, Professor Stein, you know what's best for your students. Alright. So be it. I'll let you all stay in this room."
"I won't let any of you stay unless you fix the stitches you put on me, Professor Stein! They are imperfect! They are asymmetrical!"
"No. I am sorry, Kid-kun. This might as well be the first step of your therapy."
"Now, then. Kid-kun, hold this." the therapist said, shoving an army knife at him. "Stein, unstitch him, please." the stitches on his right arm were undone.
Kid accepted the knife. "Disgusting. I need another one to hold in my left hand." Kid demanded.
"No can do, Shinigami-kun." Sam said, almost apologetically. Then, he shoved a gun at him. "Here, take this."
"But the knife and gun aren't symmetrical." he pointed out matter-of-factly.
"No, they aren't. That's the purpose of it. Now catch, Stein." he tossed a bundle of cloth at their professor. He caught it and unfolded it; it was a blindfold.
"What do you intend to do with that?" Kid asked, admittedly aware of their intent.
"You know what blindfolds do, Mr. Shinigami." Sam said, smiling.
"Sorry, Kid-kun." Stein said, tying the blindfold around Kid's eyes gently.
"Now, get up and try to slice the dummy in front of you. Also, shoot at it."
"I don't know what it'll accomplish, but if it'll get these asymmetrical objects out of my hands, then..." Kid said hesitantly. He swung the knife once, and he heard startled gasps behind him. He smiled and shot once.
"... That defeated the entire purpose of it..." Sam said, sighing. Kid lifted the blindfold a little and saw his work. The dummy was sharply sliced precisely in half (only held together by stitches, Stein's, no doubt), and it had a bullet-hole right in the middle. Kid beamed.
"Don't smile, Kid!" Liz scolded. "You failed; don't smile!"
"I haven't failed; I've succeeded! This is perfect symmetry!"
"Yes, but it wasn't supposed to be..." the therapist huffed.
"Let's try this again, but this time..." Stein whispered something in Sam's ear, so that Kid couldn't hear.
"Ha! Great idea! Alright, put that blindfold back on, Kid-kun!"
"Stupid..." He grumbled under his breath, but did as he was told.
"Now, do the exact same thing as you did last time." Professor Stein instructed.
Kid advanced on the dummy, swung at it, and shot at it. He heard a quick, small, whooshing sound, and he figured that it must have been Stein's stitches working on the dummy's cuts.
"Ho ho! I'd say it was a true success this time!" Sam laughed. "Well, open your eyes, lad!"
Kid cautiously lifted the blindfold. He knew what this man's twisted meanings on success and failure were. His jaw dropped. The dummy, which was symmetrical in the first place, was a horrible abomination. It had a straight cut, sure, but there was a bump on the right side of its head and one on its left arm.
"It looks horrible! I created this?!" and, once again, he set off with the tears and self-destruction.
"C-calm down! Geez! Why are you killing yourself over it?!" Liz screamed. Then, when Kid cried that it was agood idea, she added, "NO! I DIDN'T MEAN TO SERIOUSLY KILL YOURSELF!!"
"... Kid-kun? Are you... Okay?" Stein and Sam both asked strangely.
"NOO!! I'M NOT OKAY! I SHOULD JUST DIEEE!!!" He cried back.
"Stop it, you idiot! Stop being so stupid!" Liz shrieked.
