It was just after sundown that it happened. It was so sudden that no one quite knew what was happening until it was too late. I was out gathering wood in the forest when suddenly I felt a blazing heat so strong that I staggered backwoods into a nearby tree. It was like my whole world had gone ablaze and was turning to ash right in front of my eyes. I knew that surely the trees would soon catch on fire, so I ran. I don't know why I thought this a good idea, but I ran deeper into the forest. The deeper I ran, the less I could see of the fire and eventually the trees closed off entirely and the burning wreckage was hidden from my view. The sun was gone and I was left in the dark. I kept seeing the image of the fire in my mind. I took a step back at the memory and tripped. I hit the ground and sleep overcame my pain. The last thought I had was that it was my fault, all of this was my fault. Why had I ignored that stupid warning when it clearly meant something? And with that thought, darkness closed in on me and I fell asleep.
