Did I Ever Tell You?

Did I ever tell you?

I was happy.

I smiled and laughed,

My arms were bare; Clearly

I didn't feel cut in half.

Did I ever tell you?

That the smile became dull

As I saw the real world.

Somehow I stayed hopeful.

That wings of light would unfurl.

Did I ever tell you?

That first night terror and pain.

Razors biting my arm and bringing blood.

It hurt and scared and drove me insane.

But it stuck to me like mud.

Did I ever tell you?

The person you see before you today,

Is weak and harrowed and bloodied.

With scars and chains, and a final day,

To run and hide and find what they need.

Did I ever tell you?

...

I needed to leave.
