Y/N L/N was an innocent, carefree and entirely normal college student who attended Freemont College in California. After taking influential classes and beginning to grow up, Y/N became determined to 'take her place in the world.' She became an animal and human rights activist. While attending Freemont, Y/N became concerned with the possible rights and legal violations she suspected are being perpetrated by the mysterious Rossum Corporation, which runs a neuroscience lab on the campus. She is disgusted with herself for allowing it to continue, stating that she 'spent four years partying under the shadow of the Rossum lab.' Y/N and her girlfriend, Lauren, who admired Y/N's activist spirit and her determination to change the world, hatched a risky plan to break into the Rossum lab with a video camera and post damning evidence of their illegal activities to the internet, thus shaming Rossum into stopping. After succeeding in breaking in, however, Y/N and Lauren were horrified to discover that Rossum is not only experimenting on animals, but on human brains and even human fetuses in highly illegal and off-the-record projects. When they are caught by security, they run from the building, but Lauren is caught in the crossfire and dies in Y/N's arms, traumatizing her. After being taken to a hospital where she refuses to speak, Y/N is hunted down by Ally Hernandez, the leader of the Los Angeles Dollhouse, who assumes that Y/N is just another person who she can dupe into signing a contact with the Dollhouse to erase her past mistakes. Y/N, however, overhears Ally's conversation with her doctor, and escapes through a nearby window.

For more than a year, Y/N stayed on the fringe of Rossum's radar, gathering as much information about them as possible and hurting them where she can, determined from what she had witnessed and by Lauren's murder to bring Rossum to justice for their crimes. Y/N became a much harder and colder person during this time.
"Y/N left a trail of misery in her wake, and more than a few bodies." Ally said to one of her guards.

A few months later Y/N sits in front of Ally as she has a camera recording what was happening in the room. Y/N looks angry. She pulls her leg up to her chest while her other hangs off the chair. Her brunette hair bewildered.
"Nothing is what it appears to be."
"It seems pretty clear to me."
"Because you're only seeing part of it. I'm talking about a clean slate."
"You ever try and clean an actual slate? You always see what was on it before."
"Are you volunteering?"
"I don't have a choice, do I?"
"How did it get this far? Y/N, actions have consequences."
"Oh, God, you're loving this aren't you?"
"I'm sorry you don't understand what I'm offering here. But what we do helps people. If you become a part of that, I can help you."
"Right. You're just looking out for me."
"Perhaps better than you have. We can take care of this mess. After your five year term, you will be free to..." Y/N cuts her off.
"I don't deserve this. I was just trying to make a difference trying to take my place in the world, you know, like she always said, and now I'm..." She gestures to the room she's in. "I know. I know. But actions have consequences."

Ally took Y/N on a tour of the Dollhouse facility. Showing her the other members that were there. She watched as Y/N took it all in. The members looked peaceful like they had no idea what was going on around them. Ally looked back at Y/N then tapped her arm.
"Are you ready, Y/N? For a new slate?" Y/N looked at her then back at the floor. She nodded. Ally led her to the wipe chair helping her into it laying her back.
"We need a memory wipe, Sonya." Y/N heard a pair of heels clicking against the floor then a female with black hair in a lab coat walked over. The girl had her back to towards Y/N.
"Relax, Y/N. There will be little to no pain at all." The woman turned and Y/N caught sight of a pair of emerald eyes she fell in love with.
"Lauren?"
