Mom stared me down as though she was trying to break though, little did she know how hard that was, "So you guys didn't do anything?"
"Nothing, now I have to go" I said sternly before heading out the door without a fight. After the other night mom has been bugging me to have Connor over again because she can see us 'working out'. If only she would have noticed by now nothing ever works out for me.
Out the door right in front of my house was the same car that almost killed me a few weeks ago. "I am here to drive you to hell" Connor announced leaning on the car.
"That's good cause I thought you were here to almost run me over again."
"Hardy har" was his response before getting back into the car to wait for me.
The drive to school was nothing special. The car, filled with a mixture of silence and small talk. A simple morning commute.
At school we stuck together on our way to English, Connor giving the worst impression of Mr. White. "And today you can do a spelling test on the dictionary sense you kids obviously know how to use that."
I raised a brow while pulling out my chair, "That made no sense."
"The first day spelling test?"
"But why does the dictionary have to be dragged into it?"
"I don't know. I thought it would sound funny."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night" I sighed leaning back into my chair only to pop back up after realising what I said may have came across wrong given our current situation.
"Speaking about that" Connor sat up clearing his throat, "My dads coming home from a business trip tonight, so I may take you up on your offer if that's okay?"
"Yeah of course, I can wait after school if you want to grab your stuff."
"It's all right here" Connor said opening his backpack just before Mr. White stood from his desk to begin the lesson.
"You prepared this? What if I said no?" I whispered.
"Would've found somewhere else to crash but I had faith in my bestie" Connor whispered with a wink.
I snickered way to loud and Mr. White called my name, "Mind explaining to the class what I just said?"
I had nothing but a red face from embarrassment. Mr. White shook his head, "Well then since you can't tell us what I said why don't you share with the class what you and Connor were chatting about?"
Looking to Connor I knew I couldn't say a thing, I didn't want to chance his secret getting out. So I bowed my head in defeat and Mr. White expected me for lunch to in his words, 'make up the time lost'. Me and Connor didn't speak to each other after that.
Sadly I couldn't say the same for Mr. White and myself. Around halfway through class he made reference to me and Connor talking earlier, all eyes on us again, Connor rolled his eyes while I had a very different reaction. My eyes dropped to my shaking hands in my lap while I could feel my body heat rising. This feeling was getting way to common and I knew I needed to leave, "May I go to the washroom?"
"You couldn't go while you were busy talking?"
I shook my head, he sighed and waved me to go, I left as fast as possible. The washroom was the only place I could get to in time, and as soon as the stall door was locked I started to cry. I didn't understand why I was crying, so I cried more. I didn't know why this was happening to me, so I cried even more. You know you've hit a low when your crying on the school bathroom floor.
"Hello?" Connors voice called into the washroom. I tried to hold in the tears just long enough for him to leave but it achieved the opposite goal. Heavy footsteps, to heavy to be a girls, came in and I knew I was done. "Payton open the door please." So I did. Coming towards me I backed into the corner slouching down and beginning to cry. He didn't say anything, he just sat beside me and pulled me close despite my refusal and let me cry.
