The entire day Harry noticed something off with his friends. Hermione spent the day furiously copying down notes while Ron sulked and couldn't keep his eyes off her. What could he have possibly missed? He didn't like when Ron and Hermione argued, but it was quite often so he decided to ignore it. Then, deciding that Hermione or Ron might come to him on their own, he decided to stop the subject completely. It was after all their classes in the Gryffindor Common Room when Hermione finally stopped Harry before he could get to bed and told him the truth of what happened. Everyone was already off to bed except the two, so she thought it was the best opportunity.
"Wait a second. So you're telling me that Draco Malfoy actually uttered the words "I'm sorry?"
Harry could not believe his ears.
"Yes."
"Was that all he did? Drink the Veritaserum and apologize for being foul to you?"
Hermione hesitated. Surely telling Harry that Malfoy was gay wasn't necessary. She could just leave it at that. Besides, what use of such information would that be to Harry in the first place? And she did promise Malfoy she wouldn't tell anyone.
"Yes. I certainly wasn't expecting it."
"So why are Ron and you so cross then?"
"Because that imbecile accused Malfoy of being a Death Eater and wanting to sacrifice me to You Know Who right in the middle of the Great Hall! Then he casted locomotor mortis on him and pretended that I wasn't even there, and I couldn't stand up for myself. I don't care how much of an arse someone is, Harry. No one deserves that kind of treatment. I mean, can you imagine! Getting hexed and called a Death Eater in the middle of the Great Hall! And all that Malfoy had said was that he wanted to have a word privately with me."
"Well, Ron does know I'm not Malfoy's biggest fan, but it does seem as though Ron crossed some lines. Do you want me to talk to him about all of this? Get him in the right mindset to talk to you?"
"If you wouldn't mind? Don't tell him, but I kind of miss that brainless bloke already," Hermione joked with a smile making its way to her lips.
"Of course. Now, I think you should get to bed 'Mione. If any of us need it, I think it would be you after the day you've had."
"Thanks, Harry. Sweet dreams."
"Sweet dreams, 'Mione."
Harry watched her go and then went up to his room. He could not believe all that had transpired that morning. I'm never going to sleep in late again, he told himself.
As he laid down, Draco Malfoy consumed his thoughts. Harry was fine when that git was being horrible to Harry and his friends because it gave Harry an excuse to hate him. An excuse to deny his feelings, but now what was he supposed to do? And why was Malfoy apologizing to Hermione in the first place? She never explained that part.
Maybe Malfoy likes her. The thought made him sick.
As sleep overtook his body, there was one thought on his mind. Surely this all would blow over. It had to. And he drifted off to sleep.
~
Draco lay in bed that night taking everything that had happened in. He couldn't believe it. Had he really said all of that? And Hermione called him brave. He never expected anyone to call him brave.
He really hoped she meant it.
Maybe Harry will see me in a different light at least, he thought, and then scoffed at himself for even thinking such a thing. Harry Potter would hate him for the rest of his life. And the sooner he accepted that, the happier he would be. At least, that's what he told himself.
Draco also hoped Hermione would keep her mouth shut about his homosexuality. He wasn't ashamed anymore, but he was still scared about the repercussions of others finding out. Especially Harry.
The last thing Draco needed was the boy he loved taunting him and using his sexuality against him as some kind of leverage. What if Harry was homophobic and used it against him in that way? What if Harry somehow found out about his little crush and taunted him mercilessly? Draco could only take so much, and seeing the other boy everyday without being able to reach out and kiss him was torture enough.
Because nothing hurts more than loving someone who will never love you back. Pining after them and never being able to have them. It drives you mad. You start to see them when they're not there, and when you miss them enough, you can almost just feel them in your arms. But, you can't. And that just adds on to the physical pain in your heart. You just need that person, and it's not just a need. It's also, in a way, a craving. You desperately crave their presence and their scent and their stupid lightning bolt scars.
It always took a lot for Draco to restrain himself in Harry's presence, but one method of doing so was escaping into his fantasies. He often fantasized of Harry stopping him after one of their lessons after finally having enough of their petty squabbling and kissing him until he lost thought of who he was.
Or he would imagine a Quidditch match where it didn't matter who won because they be way up high in the air when one of them leaned forward and kissed the other and shocked everyone in the stands.
He would even think of being near the Forbidden Forrest after hours with Harry so they could be alone when they confessed their feelings for each other and looked up at the night sky, hand in hand.
These are only a few of the fantasies that constantly ran through Draco's mind, and these were the fantasies that helped him drift off to sleep.
