I Know You Care

Draco's POV

"Malfoy!"

I look up from my book and turn to see Harry Potter storming his way through the library in my direction.

Of fucking course it's him.

I sigh and mentally prepare for whatever idiotic thing is about to leave his mouth, but I don't think I have the strength to deal with him today. Hopefully I can get out of this quickly and hide out in the Common Room.

"Congratulations, Potter. It seems as though you've managed to stumble your way into the library. Perhaps one of these days you might even crack open a book. Who knows? You might even learn something useful rather than eavesdropping in on conversations that are none of your concern, which evidently appears to be your current favorite pass time."

I collect my things and stand ready to leave, but he grabs my arm and holds it tightly.

"Malfoy I-"

"And I don't care," I say looking him directly in the eye. The pain in his eyes catches me off guard, but I shake off my concern and free my arm from his grasp.

I ignore the twinge of disappointment I now feel at the lack of contact, but I can't bring myself to leave, so we just stand there. He's so close that I could just lean forward, but... No. Harry Potter can't be trusted. He made that very clear.

I finally feel my legs working and start to walk away when I hear him speak again.

"But I think you do care."

I stop dead in my tracks and I assume he takes that as an invitation to step forward because I hear his voice getting closer and closer until eventually he's right behind me.

"And you know what else I think? I think you care so much that it's eating you up inside. I think you're desperate to let that care be seen, but you're scared, aren't you?"

He pauses. "It's okay to be scared, Malfoy."

I turn to face him and muster enough strength to speak again. Somehow he always seems to be able to render me unable to speak. I hate it.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Why are you being so insufferable?" He asks in retaliation.

"I think you know the answer to that," I say challenging him to deny it. It would be easier for both of us if he did.

He goes silent for a moment and this time I take the opportunity to leave before he has the chance to say another word.
