He heard the cries of the surrounding witnesses, as Jason Everflame fell into his time of death.
The experience was almost nothing, blackness that filled nothing. Sounds unheard of, because they couldn't be heard. They were nothing as well. Just like the life that was being lived, well, not really lived. Because it was nothing.
Death was almost scary, because it was so nothing. So empty. Like a cup somebody forgot to fill with water, and it sat empty, serving no purpose.
After what felt like hours, Jason's eyes flicked open. It seemed like he was spinning, the wind carried him like a feather. Around, and around, in circles without effort. A blur of trees and sky and people, though the memory of nothing made it all seem like madness.
He slowed down and stopped, floating midair. The winds almost bent to his will, holding him up sturdy.
The winds let him down, and he silently, and slowly fell to the ground.
It had been so long since he had stood, it felt like all the muscles he once had in his body disintegrated, and his legs collapsed. His hands slammed the ground, catching his fall. It felt strange to feel again, the ground was cold, and wet slightly.
Blinking, Jason looked around. He was in a clearing of a forest. The forest looked dark, misty, and the the trees looks hundreds of years old. Strong and healthy. But yet, they had a type of feeling, one that any individual could sense. A feeling one might think is dark, hopeless. Like it might be fading, or rather dying.
It was hard to stand, and was painful, but Jason managed to get up on his feet once again. The pain was crucial, torture, but he managed well.
"You decided to come back, eh?" A light, sweet voice whispered. It made Jason feel warm, and protected. His pain loosened enough to speak.
"Wh-who's there?" Jason managed. Then he took a wild guess. "Mother?"
"No child. Your mother is gone." She paused. Birds from above in the trees surrounding them chirped softly, as if bringing peace to the forest. "Tell me, what do you remember from the past few moments?"
"D-dark, and cold. I appeared, s-so suddenly. Pain. Lots of pain."
"I see. Would you mind turning around for me?" The soft voice echoed softly. It was strangely familiar, or very distant. One may not have known, and that is what made it troubling.
Slowly, Jason turned, being careful not to collapse. The pain was reducing gradually, but he still ached.
He saw a ghostly, beautiful lady. Elder, tall and slightly floating off the ground. A sight that made Jason question his existence. He wasn't sure what to feel. All of his emotions were jumbled up.
"I will be sending you to one of our finest resurrection beds in the village. Hopefully when you wake, you mustn't feel anymore pain. Our Rest Maidens will make sure you rest well."
And with that, Jason Everflame faded into the air. From himself, to a thread of air in the great open area of blankness. And when his muscles finally rested, he knew he must've been asleep.
