"What the hell were you thinking?!" Ivan asked as he looked down at you, you stood in front of him with both hands on his large chest. You sighed and looked behind you to find Ludwig still standing there with his arms folded across his chest.
"Look, is my brother here or not?" He asked, Ivan's eyes moved to him and narrowed, making you sigh again.
"I take in your brother, help heal his wounds and that is what you say to me? Should I have left him out there to die?" He asked, you turned to look at Ludwig to see him looking at Ivan, both men looked angry and irritated, which made you worry.
"Right now, I don't believe you. I think this whole thing was just to get me here. I should have just kept her at the camp." Ludwig replied, you heard a low growl coming from Ivan's chest as he listened to this. You turned around to look at the German, however he grabbed your arm and yanked you to him. "Get my brother. Now." You looked across at Ivan to see him wide eyed as he looked at Ludwig, not at you. You didn't know why he looked like that, however when you heard a click beside your ear you gasped. "Get. My. Brother." You could see Ivan's chest rising and falling quickly and his eyes were filling with tears as he nodded slowly. However you looked behind him when you heard a voice shout something. When Gilbert limped into view, Ivan went to help him walk and Ludwig breathed a sigh of relief, however he didn't let go of you or drop the gun. You closed your eyes and sighed deeply, wandering what you had done.
"Ludwig. Let her go and drop the gun." You opened your eyes when you heard Gilbert say this and gasped when you saw him aiming Ivan's gun at his brother. Ivan was standing behind him, looking as shocked as you. Gilbert's free hand was holding the wound on his side and he looked even paler than before now. After a while, you heard Ludwig sigh before he dropped the gun and pushed you forward. You fell onto the floor with a groan, Ivan and Gilbert both helped you stand again and Gilbert hugged you tightly before he kissed your cheek. "Listen to me. Go back inside, be with your husband, okay? Promise me." As Gilbert whispered this you were confused about what he meant, but when he took your hands in his you simply nodded. He kissed your forehead before he slowly walked to Ivan, you watched with a confused expression as Gilbert held out his hand to Ivan, however when you husband took it in his he pulled the smaller man to his chest and hugged him. The two men whispered something to each other, before they took a step back and Gilbert slowly walked to his brother. Nobody said anything until the two brothers were out of sight.
"Are you okay? I'm so sorry for shouting! Are you hurt?" Ivan asked as he ran to you and put your arms around you, looking at you for any wounds. As he dusted the dirt from you, you looked in the direction the two men had just disappeared into and sighed. "Come on, let's go inside." a while later you were sitting on the bed, looking out of the window. You had felt strange ever since Gilbert had left, you were worrying about him. "Can I tell you something?" You turned to look at Ivan, he was standing with his back against the wall and his arms were folded across his chest. His coat and scarf were gone and the top two buttons of his shirt were undone. He sat on the bed and tapped his legs, you slowly made your way over to him and sat on his lap, he smiled a little as he ran one hand through your hair. Ivan looked tired and worn out, the wounds and scars on his face looked cleaner than before. "Do you remember when we were all in the woods and I asked Gilbert if I could talk to him?" You nodded slowly. "Well, me and Him made a deal. That deal was that if anything happened to me, he would take care of you. He made me promise him that if anything happened to him I would always be with you. The same promise I made to you, right?" Another nod. Ivan sighed deeply and held onto your waist tightly. "If anything does happen, to either of us, I want you to know you have both of us." You slowly nodded and kissed him, Ivan kissed you back and his hands climbed your back, clutching at your blouse.

Everybody had left the house that afternoon. Most of the injured were now in the hospital. You were standing at the window in the front room, holding a cup of tea in your hands as you looked out at the fields. When you saw someone standing just in front of the trees, you gasped and dropped the cup. The late evening breeze outside was slightly cold and the sky was a orange colour as the sun began to set. You stopped a little distance in front of Ludwig, but you could see he was crying. You started to breathe heavily as you waited for him to speak, but he never did. He simply lifted his eyes and looked into yours, making you gasp and put both hands over your mouth. Ludwig turned and slowly walked back into the woods, when he was completely out of sight, you fell to your knees in the field and started to cry. You covered your eyes with your hands as you cried into them, tears dropped onto your skirt and your cries became louder.
"(name)? (name)! What is it? What's wrong? Please..." Ivan began to ask, however stopped. You felt his arms wrap around you and pull you into his chest as he knelt beside you on the grass. Your hands clutched at his shirt as you cried into his chest, as Ivan hugged you tightly, you soon heard quiet sounds coming from him as he cried.
~~~Ivan's POV~~~
It was now dark and (name) had been asleep for around an hour. I stayed with her until she fell asleep, she had been crying right until she fell asleep. I hated seeing her like that, she had just lost her best friend without feeling like she said goodbye. I knew when Gilbert left the house this afternoon that he was saying goodbye, the way he was acting showed me he knew he was leaving soon. I had to admit, as I thought about it I was filled with sadness. From hating the man, I realised he had become a close friend of mine, too. I was currently sitting in the front room in front of the fire with some whiskey when there was a knock at the front door. As I went to answer it, I expected Arthur on the other side.
"Arthur, she's asleep. She's not in a good way. Oh..." I stopped when I saw Ludwig standing on the other side. He was looking down, wearing a black coat and was holding something in his hands. I opened the door wider. "Come in."
" N-no. I do not want to intrude. Gilbert left some things for you both." He told me, I sighed and closed my eyes.
"We lost a good man today. Your brother and my wife's friend. My friend. Come in." I demanded, the German hesitated before he finally nodded and thanked me as he walked inside. I led him into the front room and handed him a whiskey. "To your brother." He looked at me with a surprised expression before he nodded and we both toasted and drank.
"I... want to thank you. For looking after him. And apologise for my behaviour earlier. You and your wife were friends of his, that he told me. He also told me you are friends of Feliciano Vargas, a friend of mine. He told me it is because of you the British didn't kill him when he was caught by the French. For that, I want to thank you." Ludwig finally said, I simply shook my head and filled our glasses. "Here, before he died he asked me to give this to you and your wife." I put down my glass and took the box from him, as I opened it I raised my Eyebrow when I found his dogtags, a ring he always wore on his finger and some other items. "It was one of his dying wishes. Please, take them." With a nod I closed the box and held out my hand to the German. He took it in his and shook it with a nod.
"Thank you and I am truly sorry for your loss. My wife is upstairs asleep, she's very upset about loosing him. This afternoon... he was saying goodbye to us, wasn't he?" I asked, Ludwig simply nodded. "I thought so." We both finished our drinks and I filled the glasses again.
"He told me he came to see you when you got married. He also asked me one other thing." Ludwig began, I looked over at him and nodded as I waited for him to continue. "He wanted you both to be there when he's buried. I...would like it if you were there, too." I looked down at the floor as I thought, before I nodded and looked back up.
"As long as nothing will happen, we will be there for him." I replied, Ludwig nodded and smiled a little.
"I wish I could give my apologies to Mrs Braginsky and see if she is okay. Will you pass on my condolences?" He asked, I smiled a little and nodded to him. "I never thought I'd be in your house, drinking with you and being polite." We both laughed a little as I nodded. "Well, I have to go. Thank you for your hospitality." I smiled as I took the glass from him and saw him out, as he walked across the fields and into the woods, I sighed deeply and closed the door again. The things Gilbert had left to us were mostly personal items to him. I couldn't help but smile as I looked at a drawing he had done of (name) and Feliciano and think he was a talented artist. At the bottom of the box were two letters, one addressed to me and one to (name). As I read mine I couldn't help but cry.
Ivan,
I know we both promised to take care of (name) in the event that something happened to one of us. But now I really need you to remember that promise you made to me. I need you to look after her as much as you can and as much as she needs you. Thank you for asking me to make that promise to you, it really meant a lot to me. Not just that you were a nice guy, but that you trusted me enough to ask me such a serious promise. Please, remember that promise and look after her for us both, my friend.
Gilbert.
I sighed deeply and took a large drink of whiskey before I gently folded the letter and placed it back in the envelope, I then put it back in the box to keep it safe.
~~~Your POV~~~
When your eyes opened there was a little light in the room, you guessed it was still early in the morning. When you sat up and looked beside you, you smiled a little when you saw Ivan fat asleep to your side. You gently ran your fingertip over a scar on the back of his shoulder before leaning down to kiss it gently. The realisation dawned on you that Gilbert was gone and you sat looking at the pale, scarred skin on your husbands back for a while, you weren't too sure how long. After a while you stood and walked downstairs, when you had made a cup of tea for yourself you walked into the front room and stopped when you saw a black box sitting on the table. As you opened it your eyes started to fill with tears when you saw some of Gilbert's belongings inside, along with a letter addressed to you.
(name),
If you're reading this, then something has happened. I don't want you to be sad, or cry for me. I know it will be hard, but I'm safe. I'm with friends I have lost during this war and older friends, friends I haven't seen in years. And, even though you can't see me, I can see you. I can see you living a full and happy life with Ivan and your brothers, friends. I don't know what will happen with the war, but I hope when it ends everything works out well for you: I know it will. Ivan promised me he would take care of you if something happened to me, I'll make sure he does. But, you have to take care of him, too. He's a good man who loves you very much, be with him. Stay by his side through the hard times and through the good times. Miss (name) Braginsky, you are one in a million. And I love you, my dearest friend and sister.
Gilbert.
When you folded the letter and put it back into the envelope, you sighed deeply as you returned to to the box and lifted out his dog tags which hung on a silver chain. As you hung them around your neck, you held them in your hands as you cried into them.
