It started like any other day, Jake and I had breakfast and started walking to school. I was in my last year of med school and he was just starting is major in astronomy and physics at Pennsylvania state, the  Philadelphia campus. We had gotten in to the same school, little smart one he followed me every where. Our relationship was stronger than most brother and sister relationships, our parents had died when I had just started high school. Jake was wrecked and for the first week we were in foster care until our aunt could get the right papers stating if anything happened to our parents she was our god parent. He had just started middle school and was kind of an outcast due to his social awkwardness and nerdy appearance, and everyone was used to the Brenzeincoffer name belonging to the most popular, smart and friendly person you could meet, me, good I sound like a snob. Sadly after my parents died that girl died too, thank god. Although the worst part about my parents being dead was everyone asking me if I was okay and if I needed anything they were there. Well I was sick of it I had decided to stick to my plan of becoming a doctor, to help people so I finished high school early. And that's what got me here, med school.
Winter had just begun in Pennsylvania and god was it cold. I always walked Jake to class since my aunt had died last year I felt like he was my responsibility, it was my job to protect him. He hated it at first but soon he enjoyed it, the nice thing about college was he was no longer that weird outcast. He had plenty of friends just like him. Me not so much I had one friend but we were mainly lab parters and the occasional study buddy. I had become very suspicious of people, my parents deaths weren't what you would call normal and should have been investigated, but the small town we lived in the police just marked it a cold case after the first month of finding nothing. Jake had not thought much of it but I had started taking self defense classes and fighting classes after their deaths I also went to a shooting range every week. It kind of freaked my aunt out but she assumed that was how I was copping. I had always believe there was a supernatural realm since I was little but as I grew up and became more school oriented I left it behind but I still took Greek and Roman mythology classes and my brother had always believed there was more to this world and universe, hint the astronomy. Although every time I tried to talk to my aunt or the police about my parent's deaths they said I needed to rest and to try talking to a psychiatrist, maybe they were just clueless or hiding something.
It was now my last class and I was meeting a friend, well hopefully an insider to my parents death, at the campus coffee shop and Jake was going to the library with his buddies. Yeah I was nervous but my gut and curiosity got the best of me I needed to know the truth.
"Hi are you James ?" There was a guy dressed in plaid and covered in tiny cuts and had a little scruff. He had dark black hair and light brown eyes.
"Yeah, your Skyla right?" His voice was rough and scratchy.
"Yes, um so you said you might have insight to my parents unnatural death." I sat down at the table in front of him.
"Yes, now I know this might sound crazy and like I'm on drugs-"
"Look nothing could possibly sound to crazy to me, seriously."
"Alright look, monsters, they're real and I think one might have gotten your parents or maybe a demon."
"You're serious a demon and monsters, do you have a way to find a out which one could of done it." James had a surprised look on his face like he thought I was crazy.
"Yeah I do, you believe me?"
"Yes of course I knew there was always something out there maybe not exactly monsters but hey, so do you have a book or something to figure out what did it, do you think I could borrow it ?"
"Yeah I have a book but I'm gonna need it back."
"If your free tomorrow I can meet you back here at the same time and return it to you."
"Yeah sounds good, I just hope you know what you're getting your self into Skyla."
"Trust me I do, thank you James see you tomorrow." And with that I took his book and headed to my dorm.
Jake wouldn't be home for at least another two hours. So I started reading and copying things down. I even found ways to kill these things, James might not have had the most information about these monsters but it was very helpful compared to my searching.
"Heya sis, whatch ya got there?" Jake had come in.
"Hey Jake, just a book a friend lent me." His gave me suspicious face.
"Cool it looks old can I see." He reached for it. But I pulled back in time.
"No ! I mean um it's just an old book about  medical stories and procedures and old cures."
"O-Kay I'm  gonna go take a shower now weirdo." He kind of lingered trying to see the book but I knew him and I knew I was going to have to be careful with this book or he's going to think I've gone off the deep end.
I had waited till he was in a deep sleep to continue reading and taking notes. I had pulled an all-nighter, but now I knew mostly everything and had a pretty good idea of what killed my parents, a demon. I don't know why but their deaths seem to fit the profile of a demon. I had left early I wanted to meet up with James and talk a little more and ask some important raging questions. James was very nice and explained everything and he even gave me his number if I ever got my self in any trouble.
That after noon I went to the library because I knew Jake wouldn't be there ,today is video game day, him and his friends play video games every Friday night, sleep and party. I had found every book on demons and folklore normally this would be for enjoyment this time it was for a job, a hunt as James called it . I spent most of the night there, I rented the books I couldn't finish, due to closing hours, and went to the 24 hour café and read more. I spent most of the night drinking coffee and reading. Morning came and Jake came rushing in with a panicked face.
"Where the hell have you been I've been worried sick, Sky, I swear you scare me sometimes".
"Sorry I forgot to leave a note I just stopped by the library and decided to get a coffee and read."
"Don't lie ! You never came home last night and I checked at the library first they said they had to kick you out last night. And from your face it looks like you haven't gotten sleep in days, are you not telling me something, you know safe space right?"
"God do you ever shut up, and don't answer just let me speak. I'm just studying to prepare for the next section."
"Really I didn't know demons were apart of med school."
"Well I saw this and it looked interesting and I decided to take a well deserved break."
"Fine but next time a text would be nice, oh and get some sleep please before people start asking if your doing drugs or something."
"Fine." I payed my bill for the cups of coffee and a plate of toast, then left with Jake back to the dorm we spent most of the day in silence we had midterms coming up and neither of us could afford to fail.
I finally decided it was time for a break I got up and put on my coat and grabbed my phone and keys. Before I could get out the door Jake spoke up
"Where are you going ?"
"Out, I need a break, god you're annoying." I said walking out the door, I headed to the cafe I needed to finish my book and return it.
I finished it and returned the books. I decided if I was going to hunt this demon down I was going to need supplies. I went over to the parking lot in front of our dorm building and got into 'my' old chevy truck, it was my dads I got it after he died. I headed to the store and bought some salt and and a few other groceries we needed. Then I headed to the pawn shop. I was going to need some silver for protection against the other monsters if I ever ran in to them. I bought a gun a colt 1911a1 Govt to be specific it was nice looking and looked like it would last long. It was engraved and had an ivory handle, the guy gave me good price too and chipped in some bullets for free. I kept everything in my bag until I got to room and Jake must have left, so in put the gun under my pillow and the Knife in my night stand and the salt in the cabinet with the rest of the other food. The only supply I didn't know how to get was holy water. The door opened.
"There you are I was looking for you, seriously would it kill you to pick up your phone."
"Sorry I went to go pick up some groceries I must have left my phone in the truck." He rolled his eyes at me.
The rest of the night we watched tv and ate left over Chinese food. Jake fell asleep on the couch and I took the opportunity to clean my gun. After it was cleaned and loaded with the safety on and safely put under my pillow I research how to get holy water, which took for ever. Luckily there was a church near campus and all I had to do was ask a priest for water to cleanse my soul. And have him put the water in a bottle with a rosary and say a prayer or something and I had holy water.
So that's how I spent my Sunday and thank god Jake didn't question my actions. We weren't very religious people but after we were taken in by our aunt she made us got to church once a month so we could 'talk' to our parents through god. I never believed in god, I always had a feeling he had left a long time ago and wasn't coming back. My brother had some belief but not much due to his career in astronomy and science.
