November had soon dissolved itself into December. Christmas carols were playing in every shop, café, and any other assorted buildings Bella entered. Snow was falling (though the New York traffic ensured that it didn't stay pure and white for long). Things felt really good. There was something about the Christmas season that tended to put everyone in a good mood.
Though it was only December 4, and the first Friday of the month, Liz and Bella had plans to bake sugar cookies and make a gingerbread house. It was a tradition of theirs. The cookies were for eating, but the gingerbread house was not. They would always spend hours meticulously crafting the perfect mansion made of cookies, frosting, and candy.
After getting home and attempting (and failing) to start her homework, Bella packed a bag for Liz's house. The plan was for Bella to spend tonight and tomorrow night at Liz's, returning home Sunday night just before dinner with Alex. She upended her backpack and dumped all her school supplies out onto her bed. At Liz's, Bella had her own designated drawer for toiletries since she spent so much time there, and Liz had the same at Bella's house. Bella packed clothes, her computer, and To Kill a Mockingbird – which she had to read by Monday.
Alex wasn't home and wouldn't be until later, so Bella scribbled a quick note as well as texting him to let him know she was leaving.
The December air was freezing, but Bella found it refreshing. With a heavy coat on, knit gloves, and a scarf wrapped around her neck, Bella looked like a picturesque city girl to anyone who passed her. Her rosy cheek and wind chilled nose tied the look together.
Despite it being only a little after five, the sky was already dark. To get to the subway, Bella had to cross the street – something that made her a little nervous. It was dark and she was wearing a navy-blue coat, and she wasn't sure if the roads were icy... if someone wasn't paying attention...
Nevertheless, Bella sucked it up and crossed the street after looking both ways. Her fears were confirmed when she was suddenly accosted by a pair of bright headlights. Before she could do anything, like teleport out of the way, a hand was wrapped around her waist and she was shooting into the air.
Bella screamed. And she didn't open her eyes until her feet found solid ground once more. Panting, Bella looked around and saw that a male figure dressed in what appeared to be a blue and red pajama suit was staring at her through a mask.
"You should really watch where you're going next time," the masked figure said, in a voice that definitely belonged to a teenage boy.
"Who are you?" Bella asked, dumbly.
"Oh—I, uh... I'm Spider-Man."
"Well, um, thanks for saving me," Bella said, looking around. She just now realized that they were standing on a roof. "Any chance you could do me yet another solid and get me down from this roof? I have to get to my friend Liz's house."
Spider-Man shot something out of a contraption on his wrist and grabbed Bella's waist. This time, now that Bella knew what was happening, she laughed as she swung through the air. Her hair whipped around her head as she soared.
"That was amazing," she exclaimed, an exhilarated look in her eyes as she and Spider-Man touched down. "Holy crap, that was the best thing I've ever done in my life!"
"Well, I'm happy to be of service."
Saying nothing more, Spider-Man shot a web and barreled up towards the sky. Still in awe, Bella scrambled for her phone and opened up the Twitter app.
@queeninthenorth: met some guy in tights named spiderman and he saVED MY LIFE

@queeninthenorth: looks like there's a new hero in town... if i were poltergeist id be sweating rnAfter hitting 'send' on the second tweet, Bella slipped her phone back into her pocket and progressed into the subway station. She was at Liz's place fifteen minutes later and making cookie dough five minutes after that.
"Oh!" Liz said, as Bella was dolloping dough onto a pan. "I saw your tweets!"
"Oh, my god!" Bella squealed, dropping the spoon she was using. "It was so cool, Liz! He grabbed me and pulled me out of the way and we were, like, flying through the air."
"Was he cute?"
"Liz, he was wearing a mask."
"Well, did he sound cute?"
"He had a nice butt," Bella said, shrugging. "His voice wasn't deep but it was cute sounding, I guess."
"Make out with him," Liz ordered.
"I don't even know who he is."
"Put yourself in danger so he has to save you again."
"Liz, I could die!"
"Bella!" Liz said, rolling her eyes. "You gotta be willing to die for the dick!"
