"Ugh! I have no idea what to wear!" I groan out and fall back on my messy bed covered in not only the clothes I've decided against staring up at my ceiling that is littered with star shaped glow in the dark stickers that Tess and I put up in middle school.
"Good thing you me coming to the rescue." My best friend says on the phone through the speaker and I sigh getting back up to pull out another pair of jeans from my dresser. "I'm pulling onto your street now."
"'Kay, the door is unlocked for you." I say taking the phone in my hand as I walk through the house to unlock the front door for her to come in and stop upon seeing my mom on the couch.
"Are you planning on wearing that?" She asks with a chuckle and I look down at my sweatpants and shirt that is stained from the one time we tried to cook a complicated spaghetti Bolognese recipe, which ended up all over me instead of the pasta dish.
"Yeah. What do you think?" I say sarcastically and place my hands on my hips striking a pose.
"Well, I can honestly say I think Kyle would be disappointed." She replies and smiles removing her reading glasses from her nose. "You look beautiful in anything, of course but this really isn't your best look for a first date, hon."
"I don't know why I'm so nervous...I've known him for years and we're great friends but what if that's all we're meant to be?" I say and sit down on the arm of the chair and a half letting myself fall back with a groan. "I don't think I've ever been this excited and nervous at the same time for a date."
"I consider that a good thing." Mom says and I tilt my head back to look at her seeing her smile.
"Yeah?" I ask and sit up when I hear a car pull up followed by Tess coming in the front door with a bag in one hand and her purse in the other.
"Your best friend to the rescue, mademoiselle!" She says with a playful bow taking off her coat and tosses it over the couch just like I do when I come home.
"At least someone is here on my side to reassure you that you look beautiful in anything." Mom says as she stands from the couch to open her arms up to Tess and my best friend hugs her just as enthusiastic as any family member would. "Oh it's been too long, honey."
"Yes, it has and I am here to hang out all night." Tess replies and kisses my mother's cheek before turning her attention on me. "But right now, I have some work to do it seems..."
"Remind me why I called her?" I ask my mom as she sits down again groaning as Tess grabs my hand to pull me in the direction of my room and she drops the big shopping bag she brought on my bed.
"Because I have excellent taste in clothes and I know what my brother has planned for tonight." She says and starts to dig through the bag holding up a few different scarves up to my face. "And you'll want to heed his advice to dress warm."
"I will?" I ask and bite my lip sitting down on the edge of my cluttered bed. "We aren't going on some crazy winter wilderness hike, are we?"
"I've been sworn to secrecy but I do think it is something you'll enjoy." Tess says walking over to my closet with a multicolored plaid blanket scarf in her hand and holds it up to a few different shirts.
I watch as she takes out two of my light weight sweaters that I hardly wear because one has too deep of a V-neck that makes me feel uncomfortable and the other I'm always afraid I'll ruin in due to it being a beautiful cream color. I get up to walk over to my dresser and take in my appearance in the mirror my hair turned curly from letting it dry naturally from my shower an hour ago when I had started getting nervous. I bite my lip as my eyes trail along the edge of the wooden framed mirror where there are various pictures lined up like a timeline and smile at the one of me laughing at something that Tess had probably said, our friend Kat sitting with her boyfriend for the past two years, Ethan and in the back just behind me, I can see Kyle focusing on me. Within the past two days, I've noticed that if Kyle is in any of these pictures he somehow is always near me or his eyes are focused on me and I wonder I've never noticed before.
