Ron rushes inside his house with various items in his arms. Eggs, flour, vanilla extract. All the things needed to make a cake. Today is Carl's twentieth birthday, and though it's not much, Ron wanted to do something to celebrate.

He sets the items on the table and quickly grabs bowls to mix them in. The night before, Carol showed him how to bake a cake. He hopes he remembers everything.

"Okay, so three cups of flour, two eggs. Or was it only one?" He stops cracking the egg and tries to remember what Carol said. "No, definitely two."

He continues on with the recipe and tries his best not to put too much vanilla extract, as Carol said. Once everything is in the bowl, he begins mixing. It took some elbow grease, but he was met with the most perfect cake batter ever to exist when he finally finished.  r at least that's what he hoped it was.

Ron was so in his head that he didn't even hear the front door open and close.  Without noticing who's watching him, Ron dips a finger into the batter for a taste test.  Not bad.  Not bad at all.  He was about to go in for another taste when-

"No double dipping!"

Ron yells and almost knocks the batter over.  Michonne laughs and heads over to where Ron is standing. His heart can't stop pounding through his chest, but he's glad it's just Michonne.

"I said I was helping, remember?" Oh yeah.  With the cake.  He completely forgot.

"Sorry."

She smiles again and grabs the batter from his hands.  She tastes it before putting it in the oven.  Seems like she didn't have to help out after all.

"Just start decorating, okay?  The party starts in about two hours." Ron looks at her warm smile and feels at ease again.

Before he knew it, the timer for the stove rang as Ron put the last of the decorations up.  Michonne smiles and puts on her gloves to take the cake out. Ron practically melts as the cake aroma fills the room.

"You did a good job, Ron.  Carol taught you?" Michonne already knows the answer to that.

"Who else?" They both calmly laugh.

"Let it cool down before putting on the frosting, okay?" Ron nods before heading to his room to put on his nicest outfit.  t was a regular pair of jeans with the same leather jacket he always wears, but this time he made sure to have on a nice dark red shirt. Carl found it when they went on a run together.

About thirty minutes pass and everything is now ready for Carl.  Ron stands nervously in his living room with his un-ripped jeans and the cleanest shirt he has.  He's never been this nervous before.  What if Carl doesn't like it?  What if the party doesn't go well?

"Stop it."

Ron jumps slightly and looks down at his shorter friend.  She can always tell what he's thinking.

"Enid, I don't know why I'm so nervous."

"Maybe because you love him?  Everything's gonna be fine, Ron.  You know how Carl is."

"I know, I know." That doesn't help at all though.

"I'm gonna go get him.  Start getting everyone ready." Enid leaves without waiting for a response.  Relunctily, Ron starts telling everyone to hide.

Ron watches intensely at the door waiting for it to open.  As every second passed, Ron grew more and more nervous.  He just wants to get everything over with.  He wants to see Carl's disappointing face and realize that he didn't make him happy.

The door opens and two people walk in—one with a sheriff hat and the other with long hair.  Ron's heart sank to his stomach.  The lights switch on, and everybody yells-

"Surprise!!!"

Carl looks around the space in awe.  Everyone in the community is here.  here's cake and food and drinks.  on even found some decorations and put those up as well.  Carl couldn't believe it.  He couldn't believe that Ron loved him that much.

"Enid, where is he?" Carl looks around and sees no sight of Ron.

"I don't know...he was just here.  Try checking his room.  I'll take care of everything here."

Carl kisses her cheek before thanking everybody for celebrating his birthday.  Then he quietly leaves for Ron's room.

"Ron?  Ron, it's me.  an I come in?" Carl has his hand on the doorknob waiting for Ron's response.

"No." He sounds scared or maybe even sad.  Did something happen while he was out?

"Well, can I talk to you through the door?" No response.  "Tell me what happened."

"Nothing happened, Carl.  Everything's fine."

"Ron."

"Did you like this?  Everything that I did for you.  Was it good?" His voice is shaky, and a part of Carl wants to laugh in his face.  That's what it is?  He has to be joking.

"Ron, it's perfect.   I haven't tried the cake yet, but it smells amazing.  The decorations and the people.  It's perfect, Ron." Suddenly the door opens, and Carl is met with his teary-eyed boyfriend.

"Really?"

Carl laughs before hugging Ron.  "Yes, really."

For the first time that day, Ron laughs.

"Happy birthday, Carl."

"It wouldn't be a happy one without you.  Let's go downstairs."

"Okay."

I hope you all enjoyed this chapter!
