As he turned the knob of his apartment door, he saw a face. Him. Jeremy. Sitting on his grey couch, that same friendly smile on his face. He turned towards Alex and said 4 words. "You're lying to yourself." And disappeared.
Alex hated him. He HATED Jeremy and his stupid adorable face and his stupid adorable smirk. He wanted to cry but no tears came.
He had cried all his tears those nine years ago. He had become emotionless. Then three years ago. Jeremy. Dead. Holes. Blood. Alex's head throbbed. He and Jeremy had been sitting in their tent. Preparing for their last battle. They didn't know this. But after that battle America and Japan would sign a peace treaty. They would split Russia in half. America would get the west side, Adiena, which was closer to Europe, and Japan would get the east side, Makoro, which was closer to Japan. They also didn't know it would be Jeremy's last day alive.
They were joking around about how the war started. How Russia's government fell in three years. Communism dying along with it. How America and Japan both leaped at the chance to get new land. The story wasn't really funny. But the soldiers needed laughter. Especially Alex because when he bottled up all his feelings. When he met Jeremy at the military academy, after deciding he couldn't stay in New York, he had changed. Jeremy helped him open up. He had been his therapist.
Millie, their commander, had walked in to get them ready. Alex would never admit that he loved someone. But he did. He loved two people. In ways he didn't understand, still didn't understand, and probably wouldn't ever understand. Millie and Jeremy. Jeremy and Millie.
She smiled and gave orders. They headed out and split into two teams, Alphas and Omegas. The Omegas were the first to die. Millie with them. It had been an ambush. They were scouting and making the way clear for the Alphas, which Jeremy and Alex were leading. Then the Omegas would ambush Japan. They never got to that part. They were going to hold the death ceremony after that battle. The Alphas kept going. The whole team however died because of mine-fields. Despite Jeremy and Alex shouting at them. It was like they couldn't hear them. Jeremy and Alex were the only one left of their quadrant. Then just Alex.Alex woke up seeing white. Then the white took shape and gray filled in areas where shadows would be cast. Soon, the whole room came into focus. Including the hustling and bustling of the nurses and doctors that surrounded Alex.
He sat up and instantly a wave of pain shot through his head.
"Sir, you need to stay down." One of the nurses said. Her name-tag read Sophia Lin.
"What happened?" He asked. Rubbing his head.
"You fainted." She said quite simply.
"Also you were speaking. In terrible grammar." She said. Almost looking disgusted.
He spent the rest of the day in the hospital. It was fairly mediocre. Boring. Normal.
