"Oh? You got a letter? I got ran over, Helen gets her hair chopped off and Julie gets a body in her trunk and you get a letter? That's balanced."

Chapter two

We just lay there, I felt so small yet protected in his arms, this was the best moment in my life, I was so happy, and I was fretting this moment, thinking it would feel like when it did when I was molested. But no, this feeling was a lot better, it was a great feeling, our bodies pressed together, he kissed me softly, I smiled, I don’t think I have even been this happy in my life. I wanted to doze of right then and there, and then the doorbell rang, we both groaned as our perfect moment was ruined. It rang more rapidly, I slipped my jeans on and a hoddie over the top, I was naked underneath but I was going to return to Toby soon.

I picked up the bowl and opened the door, more little kids; I gave them a handful of candy and gave them a fake smile. I went back upstairs and peeled my clothes off and climbed back into my bed with Toby. He held me close, we didn’t do anything but embrace each other, sometimes we would kiss, at some stage I whispered to Toby “I’m hungry.” He laughed, “Tell me something I don’t know” I giggled and said “we have popcorn.” He laughed, “let us go make popcorn then.” I smiled and got out of bed and dressed myself. I bumped shoulders Toby, he laughed, is the bubbliest person I know, he laughs at everything I do.

We walked down the stairs, into the kitchen, and opened the pantry; I took out the microwave popcorn and put it in the microwave. I heard the sound of curtains beating against the wall. I was starting to get freaked out, I closed it and locked it, and then the microwave dinged. I was becoming worried, so I told Toby, he laughed, but it was slightly nervous “It’s probably your imagination, maybe you didn’t lock all the windows and doors. The doorbell thing is probably some kids sick joke.” I so badly wanted to believe him, but it just didn’t seem to stick with me. We started to watch Child’s play, Chucky also freaked me out, but I guess I scare easily.

We ate popcorn and watched movies, when I checked my watch it was half past ten, Josie should be home soon, but then knowing Mrs Brennan she was going to take her home and give her a proper dinner, then let the kids play as she watched her soap operas. The doorbell rang, I picked up the bowl and opened the door, teenagers in costumes chimed at the same time, “What’s your favourite scary movie Fleecy?” I was gobsmacked, the biggest one wrapped his arms around my waist and hoisted me over his shoulder, and they began to howl. “Toby!” I screamed he came to the door and laughed, I was going around in circles when the guy placed me down gently.

They removed their masks, I laughed so hard when I saw that my best friend Lily, her brother Jake and his best friend (and Lilies boyfriend) Kyle, all laughing. Lily, still cracking herself up came and hugged me so did Jake and Kyle. Jake was the one who had picked me up, he liked me but I didn’t like him in that way. Lily and Jake only lived a few doors away, I frowned as they began to mock me screaming for Toby, but then lily said “awwww!” when he kissed me on the cheek, he stood behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist, resting his head on my shoulder. “You guys want to go play more tricks on the other people in our grade?” Jake asked. I looked at Toby; Lily chimed in “ummm, you guys probably don’t want to! It’s alright we’ll see you guys tomorrow at school!” he nodded and waved goodbye.

Lily knew I hated going out on Halloween, and she knew what had happened to me, she and I had gone trick or treating together, but then we were separated when I was grabbed from behind. We went back inside and cleaned up the candy mess. We walked back to the couch, before I sat down, Toby caught my hand and looked deep into my eyes, “Fleecy, why do you hate Halloween?” I stopped for a second, I bore into those jade eyes, and I mustered up as much courage as I could, I hated talking about it, and I asked “do you want the story or should I cut to the chase.” “Cut to the chase,” he whispered. He probably thought it was some superstition or something or rather. I took a deep breath, and answered, “When I was ten, I was molested by a man while I was trick or treating with Lily.”

He took a deep breath, “do you mind if I asked for the story now?” I shook my head, and answered “As I said, I was trick or treating with Lily and our mom’s. We walked past an old house and I slowed down, because I thought I saw a shadow in the window, Lily had ploughed ahead and our mom’s not too far behind, they hadn’t realized that I had slowed down. I started to walk to catch up with them, when the man grabbed me from behind… well once he was done with me, he let me go, he is still on the run, the police have almost caught him three times, but he’s slippery, like soap. That’s why I keep thinking he’s coming back for me, on Halloween.” I took a shaky breath, Toby was speechless, things were awkward now, but we were saved by the doorbell ringing, I gave the kids more candy, then crawled up next to Toby, he just held me close, I had no idea what thoughts were running through his head right now.

He wrapped a protective arm around me, I had to stay up and wait for my sister anyway, cause the key isn’t outside anymore, just in case the bastard comes back to get me. I was beginning to feel sleepy, just as I was about to close my eyes, the home phone rings. I got up and answered it. “Hello?” I said into the mouth piece, nothing, then heavy breathing, I frowned and hung up, “who was it?” Toby asked, I shrugged my shoulders, and then buried my face in his chest, inhaling his familiar scent. He kissed the top of my head, we sat in silence, it was an awkward silence, but I didn’t mind, as long as I was near him, being with him. The doorbell rang, “I’ve got it,” toby whispered and left me sitting on the couch.

I couldn’t hear anyone, not even toby, complete silence, I bit my bottom lip, started to gnaw it, then I heard the floorboards creak upstairs, my heart stopped completely, rapid footsteps, my breathing quickened, my heart beat pulsed at an incredible speed. Toby came back, he saw the worried look on my face, “Fleecy, What’s wrong?” I pointed to the stairs, “I heard someone upstairs.”
