Chapter One

“Fleecy, Do I look scary enough?” I turned and looked at my little sister, “Josie, you will scare the living daylights out of them.” She smiled and hugged me. She was dressed as a little witch, her face, hands and any skin showing was painted green. She wore a pointy hat, and held a broom stick, she told me to leave her hair alone. Even though she’s only eight, she still takes pride in those flowing gold locks of hair. Her bright, sapphire eyes bore into mine, searching for the tiniest bit of a lie. I have to admit, I spent hours on making her look good, I was happy with my works. “Fleecy! Why can’t you take me trick or treating?” I sighed and laughed “I think you already know the answer!” she nodded, but she didn’t know the real answer, she just thought it was because Toby was coming over.

The truth is, I used to love trick or treating, it’s just, when I was ten I was molested by a man on Halloween, ever since I have hated it, also, I have developed this fear of the bogey man, that’s why I always have Toby or one of my friends over on Halloween, so I feel safer, but only the tiniest bit. The doorbell rang and I checked my watch, five past eight. “Now go along with Mrs Brennan and her kids, remember your manners, when someone gives you candy you thank them and remember to thank Mrs Brennan after she has taken you trick or treating alright?” Josie nodded and squeezed me tight; I stroked her gold hair.

I opened the door to see no one there; I shrugged my shoulders and closed the door. “Who was it?” Josie asked with a curious tone. I shrugged my shoulders, “no one was there, some kids probably playing a prank.” I smiled nervously, trying hard not to freak her out, I had a sneaking suspicion that it wasn’t just some kids playing a prank. I shook my head, trying to waver away those kinds of thoughts. The doorbell rang again, this time I was hesitant to open the door, but when I did Mrs Brennan and her two crazy children stood there. “Fleecy! My darling! You’ve grown since the last time I saw you! Oh and you look so lovely!” she hugged me tight, I hugged her back, she was like a second mother to me.

“Josie! Come to the door!” I called out to Josie; she frolicked and stood by my side. “Hi Mrs Brennan!” she waved shyly, “Oh go on Josie, Mrs Brennan won’t bite you, and if she does, I’ll smack her.” I winked at Mrs Brennan; she bellowed a good hearted laugh. “WOW! You two have grown so much!” I said to her two sons, Jack and Aaron. They laughed and waved at Josie, she hid shyly behind my arm. I laughed and picked her up and slung her over my shoulder, she giggled and squealed “put me down fleecy! Put me down!” I took her outside and put her down. “Now you go have fun kiddo!” I whispered and kissed her on the cheek. Mrs Brennan took her and exchanged a serious glance with me, “I promise I won’t let her out of my sights.”

I nodded gratefully and waved them all a goodbye. I ventured inside and locked all the doors and windows, I sat on the couch and turned on the T.V, Toby should be here any minute, and with all my heart I hoped he was coming soon. I curled up and hugged my knees to my chest; they always showed cheesy horror movies on Halloween, like the nineteen fifty’s movies such as Bram Strokers Dracula or Frankenstein. I flicked through the channels, hoping to find a good movie, Stephen King’s IT was on, it was the newest one they had on. The doorbell rang, I stood up and unlocked the door, I opened it, and no one was there. I frowned and closed the door, re locking it.

I began to wonder what had happened to Toby, he should be here by now. I checked my watch, half past eight. I sighed and turned the television off. I went upstairs, into my bedroom. My window was open, I frowned and closed it and locked it, I had been sure that I had locked all the windows and doors. I flung myself onto my bed, missing Toby, with his big green eyes, brown hair; I lost myself in those thoughts. I was deaf and blind to the world right now that I didn’t hear footsteps trudging up the stairs.

It only occurred that someone else was in the house when a shiver rolled down my spine. Someone was watching me. I sat up abruptly, no one was there, I shuddered, and I stepped outside my room only to be grabbed by hands. I screamed, the hands let me go and laughter was to be heard. I turned and shoved Toby. “What you do that for?” I was angry at him. Still laughing, and hugged me, I glared at him. “How’d you get in?” I asked suspiciously. He stopped laughing and said “you think hiding a key under your mat is the best thing to do?” “Shit! I forgot about that!” I cursed. I ran downstairs and flung the door open, lifted the mat and took the key. I ran back inside and locked the door.

Toby scoffed, “You really hate Halloween? Don’t you?” I nodded and took his hand, he lightly kissed my forehead. I still hadn’t told him about what had happened to me when I was ten on Halloween. How do you start to tell someone something like that? Just casually say “oh hey, seven years ago I was raped by a man who I thought was the bogey man, so that’s why I am terrified of Halloween!” You don’t really just say it, but I do love Toby, so I decided to make this the night I tell him. “So what do you want to do?” I asked out of curiosity, he shrugged his shoulders, “whatever you want to do Fleecy.” I smiled “let’s watch some T.V!” he laughed at my eagerness, we sat down, I cuddled up close to him, resting my head on his chest, Silence of the Lambs was on, Hannibal Lecter scares the shit out of me, But he wasn’t so bad with Toby near me.

My favourite line was coming up, but then the doorbell rang, I sighed and left Toby’s arms and grabbed the candy bowl. I answered the door, no one was there, I was starting to get freaked out, I shut and locked the door again. I put down the bowl and crawled back into Toby’s arms. He smiled and kissed the top of my head.  About ten minutes later the doorbell rang again, this time Toby came, a small group of kids around eleven or twelve shouted “TRICK OR TREAT!” I laughed and gave them a handful of candy each. “Thanks Fleecy!” One little girl chimed, must be someone’s little sister. Toby wrapped one arm around my waist; I put down the bowl and pressed my lips against his, he smiled against my lips.

He took my hand, I looked into his sea green eyes, and I lifted onto my tip-toes and kissed him again, we kissed continuously, our lips moving in perfect sync, I stopped kissing Toby and ran upstairs, I flung myself onto my bed, Toby entered the room, he laughed at my sight, he took my hand and pulled me up to him, our bodies so close together. He leaned do and whispered “You sure you’re ready?” I nodded and kissed him.
