Chapter 1
It was a usual rainy day in Manhattan. Passerby's rushing to work under a sea of jet black umbrellas through the overcrowded crossroads, avoiding jammed roads that emit loud honking that one couldn't take.
The sky was painted in gray, a pretty boring sight, for some it was sad - as it matched their moods.
Of course, nobody in their right mind would willingly want to wake up on such a hostile morning when they could spend it in the inviting warmth of their bed. And that's exactly what Marvin did. Calling in sick is the best privilege a job could offer, and one would be a fool not to take advantage of it.
At half past 10, the auburn haired man glanced at his mobile screen, something he repeatedly did since yesterday which added up to the reason why he missed his job.
"I'm done."
He dragged himself up and stretched like a cat. Being in grief was not going to stop him from trying to be cheerful. Oh, who was he kidding, he was devastated. As for his girlfriend, his beloved Alexandra left him for the man of her dreams; a tall, broad shouldered Italian with a plump salary of a CEO at a wealthy company. Since then, he couldn't stop checking his mail box, e-mail and cell phone for any message from her. There were none, obviously.
The rain had long subsided and the sky was one shade lighter, reflecting Marvin's mood. At exactly 12:00 pm his ever bestest buddy Ray Osun decided to visit him. As his name stated, that's how one may describe him, just a shining 'Sun's ray'. Now that is a witty and a pretty ridiculous pun the parents created for their son.
"Aren't you supposed to be at work?"
Ray gave a smug smile.
"Aren't YOU supposed to be at work?"
"Fair enough." Marvin stepped aside to let Ray step into his home.
Sitting down, Marvin reached for the remote. "Hey man, I heard what happened. I'm sorry, I know you loved her."
Marvin's eyes widened for a moment but he composed himself well enough.
"I still love her. How do you know anyway?" Curiosity ran in his blood.
"Well, her brother is my friend's neighbors' son's friend and he is a friend of my friend's sister who told my friend and he told me."
Marvin brought his palms to his face and let out a loud groan followed by a sigh. "Doesn't anyone mind their own business anymore?"
"Well at the least the gossip helped you get the day off today-"
"Rrrrrrrr." Looking up with an unreadable aura about him, Marvin glared in annoyance at Ray's amused look. Ray let out a nervous laugh and pet his poor friend's shoulder. "Come on, get ready."
"What?"
"Come on dude, don't tell me you're gonna sit around watching romantic comedies and mop around by yourself the whole day." Ray emphasized on 'yourself' giving a look to say, 'no way I'm gonna see you do that'.
"Close. I'm going to lie around watching romantic comedies and mop around by myself the whole day." Marvin's stare was blank.
Ray let out a small sigh. I'm not letting him be like this - he thought.
"Come oooooon."
Silence.
"I'm gonna kiss you."
No reply.
"On the lips."
"FINE!" Marvin was not actually angry, he needed someone to shake him out of what took him over. He stood up and walked away to change.
"Be back in 10."
"Ohkay." Ray grinned. Bad luck, he looked forward to get that kiss.
