Chapter Three: New Friends
There is absolutely nothing worse than waking up to a ridiculously loud alarm that wants for nothing more than to give me a splitting headache. Moaning and groaning I make my way out of my nice, warm comfortable bed. After my shower and doing my hair I decide on some normal blue denim jeans and a simple white v neck shirt that has a watercolour stag on the front. I put a light layer of makeup on throwing my pink boots back on as I head out the door.
The café is busy, there are at least ten patrons milling about and three male staff members trying to keep up with orders. I think I see a lady out the back cooking but I can't be too sure from here. I begin to feel overwhelmed. I find myself inching back towards the door, apparently after only rarely encountering singular persons for a day I have a new found shyness. Well now I'm just being silly, I have never had a problem with people and I won't start now. Taking a deep breath I enter further the café, every head turning in my direction. Ignoring the weight of the stares I make my way to the counter where I see that Blake is still working, and sigh. I had really been hoping that he wouldn't be on shift, hopefully I get one of the other staff members.
I feel the air shift beside me, turning in that direction I see that it is Raina perching herself up the stool beside me.
"Hi Sybilla, have you stopped by for dinner as well then?"
"Hey Raina, yeah thought I had better get myself fed, though I was enjoying an epic sleep before my alarm went off."
I decide that I really do need a friend in this town and so far Raina seems like my best, and possibly my only hope for one. Much to my dismay it is Blake makes his own way over to us to take our orders. I roll my eyes at my misfortune. I really do seem to be having the worst luck since arriving here. He shares a strange look I cannot decipherer with Raina before turning to me with a sincere expression.
"Look Sybilla I really am sorry for earlier, I was rude and there isn't really any excuse for the way I was acting. Drinks and dinner on me tonight. I don't expect you to instantly forgive me but maybe we can come to a bit of a truce?"
Raina is watching on curiosity shining bright in her eyes and I know that I will be asked to tell her the story behind this later.
Inclining my head, "Yes I think we can call a truce especially given with the offer of some food, speaking of food were you only coming over to apologise or are you still on shift?"
All three of us chuckle softly as Blake takes both my and Raina's food and drink orders, after he leaves Raina convinces me to spill what happened earlier.
"That's really unusual I've been here for a couple days now and as far as I can tell the men really appreciate and respect females because there will be so few of us here." She states once I finish telling her about earlier.
Her frown continues to deepen and she appears deep in thought so I leave her be while I think about it all. What has been made obvious now is that there will only be a few females here and high number of males attending the Academy and I begin to wonder if that is really safe. The internet had put this town down as having a near perfect safety record though so maybe the male populace is what makes it so safe? The more I hear and explore the town the more I wish that I wasn't stuck here. I wonder if there wouldn't be somewhere else I could go, maybe one of mum and dad's friends wouldn't mind if I stayed with them for a little while. But most of the families I know have young children and busy lives and I couldn't burden them any further just because something didn't go the way I was expecting it too. I sign and allow the lone tear to make its way down my cheek, when I look up Raina is glaring daggers at Blake who looks pale and distressed.
