Her phone had gone off 4 times in the last ten minutes, it was getting annoying, but she couldn't stop dancing. Eventually Lindsay, whom was not in the number they had been rehearsing, looked at the phone. It read "missed call : Jules(5), missed call : Kristy🐱(4), missed call : Mariann Hough(1)" all within seconds of each other.
"Hayley, you have ten missed calls, I think you may want to call them back." She got worried, usually they would leave a voicemail and text and have her get back to them. Something felt wrong, or really just off. She clicked Julianne's number first. She was quick to answer, even though it felt like forever.
"Hayley! You need to come to UCLA Medical. It's Derek."
"Wait what?! Is he okay? What's wrong?" She began to panic, and the rehearsal came to a halt.
"He had been complaint of a headache, more a migraine. All day. And a few minutes ago started having chest pains, he's having trouble breathing. They admitted him and are doing tests, but they are not legally allowed to make any medical decisions without you." This was true, just last year Derek and Hayley talked for a long time, months, about having each other as their medical spokesperson. They decided it was the best thing and signed legal documents. She began to cry. She frantically began to gather her things through her tears. She was so scared.
At the age of 17 her father had a heart attack, and she almost lost him. It was the worst 4 days of her life, she couldn't bare the thought of losing Derek.
"Hey, let me drive you, you can't drive yourself. Tell me where we are going." Lindsay told her. She helped gather her things and go to her car. Hayley called her mom and told her what was going on. She would be on the next flight out at 3 in the morning that night.  The 40 minute drive with no updates lasted forever. She ran into the hospital and asked for his room.
"Room 4920. It's the cardiac ICU. The elevator is right down the hall on the right. Make sure you check in with the man at the desk in the waiting area." They ran to the room and found Derek laying there in agony wired up to anything and everything. She couldn't bare to see him like this, tears fell down her face. He glanced over, and attempted a smile.
"Babe, you made it." He struggled to get out the words, but he still managed.
"Hey babe, how are you feeling. You really scared me." This was true she was scared, still is.
"Better I guess, they still don't know what the pain is."
"Have they ruled out anything yet?"
"They've ruled out stroke, and heart attack. They ordered an EKG ultrasound of his heart." This was his mom talking to her, as she spoke she came closer to Hayley, and as she spoke Hayley began to shed more tears. Marianne started to hold her and comfort her. This was just like her father all over again. She pulled up a chair and held onto his hand, and as more people came and left and had fallen asleep holding him. He smiled at how worried and caring she was towards him. Mariann took a picture of his moment, sent it to him, and posted it on Instagram. They were very open about their relationship now and happy to be together. The post read :

"After a long hard tour, this is where it leads us

"After a long hard tour, this is where it leads us. Derek came home with a migraine early this morning and later complaining of severe pain in his chest. We called an ambulance and here we stay. I have never seen the kind of love and compassion these two share. Hayley was scared to death, and fell asleep hold his hand, just so she'd know he was there. Updates to come." They had done the EKG, and were back with results. Marriann woke them up.
"Through the EKG it is evident that he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which means the muscle in his heart has gotten to be too thick, causing enlargement of the heart. You are extremely lucky, most people don't have the symptoms." They breathe a sigh of relief that he was the lucky one. Hayley squeezes his hand tighter than before. The doctor continued to speak.
"Now treatment options. There is surgery, we can put in a pacemaker, or a defibrillator when your heart rate is too abnormal. Medications, and you must reduce your exercise regimens. I'll give you some time to think this over." They sat for hours contemplating, arguing, and crying over this. Their ultimate decision was for him to undergo the surgery, and go on medication, and stop his dancing career. If he were to continue there would be a high chance at him having a heart attack, or cardiac arrest. This devastated all of them. Derek announced his diagnosis and their decisions on Instagram.

"With a heavy heart, I am here to inform you today is the end of my dancing career

"With a heavy heart, I am here to inform you today is the end of my dancing career. With strong chest pains, many tests and doctors have concluded I have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is the enlargement of heart muscle. Causing murmurs, arrhythmias, and other issues. I have been very fortunate to have had the symptoms I did because most will not know this is happening until death. My mom, Hayley, and I have sat here for hours to come to this conclusion. I will undergo surgery in the morning to take out the muscle to create blood flow, and be on medication to release the pressure and to lower blood pressure. The best way to treat this is to limit physical activity, to relive stress on the heart. As of now this is the best way to go. This is not the end of my involvement in dance, there is so many ways I will be involved with this activity. Thank you for all these years supporting me. And thank you to Hayley and my family for being here when I needed you most. I love you. - D." Hayley went on and posted as well.

"Today was the hardest day of my life

"Today was the hardest day of my life. To see someone you love so much in so much pain with no answers is so hard. Even with answers it is hard, but now we can move forward with recovery, and hopefully do what he loves again. As of today I will not continue on the Dancing with the Stars : Hot Summer Nights Tour, until I feel comfortable leaving Derek. He is my top priority over my job. I am sorry to disappoint and I hope everyone understands this decision. I love you D."

(A/N - is is sadder, but I was really into it. I hope you like it. I will have the second part up next! Stay tuned.)
