Jacqueline Stood inconspicuously in the corner of the biggest halloween store in town. She had her earbuds in, tuning out the cheesy music that played constantly. Halloween was one of her favorite holidays, but not for the reasons other people would give. Most people would say "The costumes!" or "the candy!", but Jacqueline was not most people. She liked it because she loved being scared and the creepiness. She called herself a goth, so it was in her nature to love it. Despite that, she would never had come there on her own. Her three close friends had dragged her. It wouldn't have been as bad if they had chairs to sit on. Instead, she stood in her corner and watched her friends flit around happily. Hazel was probably closest to Jacqueline for some reason. She had messy blonde hair and always wore the same sweatshirt that said "Keep Calm And Ship It" in large yellow letters. Hazel was an odd choice for a friend, since she was very optimistic and Jacqueline always had something negative to say. She was an obsessive fangirl, to put it bluntly. Every year was something different. In 7th grade, she claimed she was a vampire and told everyone she had died 200 years ago. (It was her goth phase. She was out of it now, though). In 8th grade, it was the Wizard of Oz. That was irritating. Every five minutes she would be humming upbeat songs and she skipped everywhere. She had sworn she would name her future pet Toto. Jacqueline wondered if she would stay true to her word. Now, it was Gravity Slides. A meh cartoon Jacqueline had been forced to watch over the summer by Hazel herself. It was all she talked about. Literally. Even her halloween costume was a character from the show. It was weird. Right now, she was flitting about the entire store, looking for the "perfect" things to use for her costume. Another one of her friends, was Sandy. Sandy perpetually had a flower wreath in her wavy brown hair. She was always smiling and sweet, which Jacqueline found odd. How did she do it? She bet that Sandy was faking it a lot of the time. She WAS an actress. Yes, the smiley girl was a huge theater geek and joined every production she could. Jacqueline never went to see her, but she was sure she was good. Other than that, she seemed like a simple creature. She wasn't in Jacqueline's line of view right now, but she knew she was singing along to the music and looking for the perfect costume. The last friend in their group was a girl named Paz. The fourth girl in the quartet was very shy. She preferred to stay silent most of the time. She was also an artist. Everyone talked about how talented at drawing she was. Jacqueline agreed that her friend WAS good, but she wasn't the type to let them know that. She leaned against a wall and people watched. Paz was looking through the makeup. Sandy walked by, singing along, just as expected. Jacqueline rolled her eyes and stared up at the ceiling. She thought about her characters. Jacqueline was a writer, which was a secret she intended to keep. Not even her parents knew about her hobby, but that didn't stop her. She had been filling up a notebook with what she hoped one day would be her book. Most of the main characters were based off her and her friends. The main character, her favorite, had shorter black and purple hair (like hers) and was a brave, no nonsense warrior. Her friends included a nymph just as friendly, inviting, dramatic and optimistic as Sandy, A peasant with a hidden talent with Paz's reservation and the ability to surprise people, and a half demon with Hazel's puns and wit. Jacqueline loved these characters dearly. She had dreamt them up from nothing and given them all backstories and complex personalities with dreams and fear and hopes. Each had somewhere to go. Right now, Jacqueline was doing one of her favorite things. She stared into space, but in her head she was thinking of little stories unimportant to the events in her book, playing with the characters and adding to their backstories. Unfortunately, she was out of ideas today, so she looked around the store instead. Her gaze fell of a rack of creepy masks near her. Sandy was a few shelves away talking to Hazel. Her back was to Jacqueline. That gave her a idea. She grabbed an evil clown mask and slipped it on. As she crept up behind her friend, Hazel noticed, and snickered.
"What?" asked Sandy, sounding confused.
"Uh...I just remembered something." answered Hazel. Paz looked over from the makeup and cracked a smile before turning around again. Jacqueline grinned under the mask and waited another full minute before grabbing Sandy's shoulders from behind and yelling
