Cooler's POV

The Girl, The Rebellion, and Wings

"So..." I began. I was usually very good at reading people, but for some reason the blond-haired girl was different. I couldn't get a read on her. "What brings you to Ru'an, if you're not here voluntarily?" I ask, almost afraid of the answer. The girl was silent for a moment, then gave a sigh.

"You must be native to Ru'an. I was forced to come as a servant to the new General who just arrived today."

"NEW GENERAL!" I practically fell over. That was BAD news for the rebellion.

"Yeah. General Edgar. I heard he's here as part of an effort to capture some town called 'scales' something or other. Why?" The girl must really be new here. Scaleswind had been under siege for about a month now. It was starting to look very bad for the rebellion and Ru'an there.

"That's not good. But... I want to know.... why are YOU here. No one comes to O'kasis without some sort of personal vendetta. What do you want to do? I promise I can keep it a secret." Her face was paused in thought for a moment, then she seemingly decided she could trust me.

"You seem to be against Tu'la. Pardon me for making assumptions other wise. I'll be honest. I want to escape. Under Tu'lan law, my family and I are in debt to the general. That means that he can treat us however he wants until we pay him back. My family currently has no intake of money, so we can't. I need to reach a Pheonix Alliance city, where I'm free to start to work and pay of what my family owes." She blinked a single tear out of her eye, than looked forward. "We must be nearly at the market now." She clearly tried to changed the topic.

"We're about three-quarters of the way. Forgive me, but I didn't catch your name. I'm Cooler." I stopped walking to stick out my hand. (If you read this, comment "Pastel is Bae" on my profile, and I'll know you read the chapter)

"I'm Rainie. Nice to meet you." We shook hands, then kept walking. We rounded the corner, walking in silence. Finally, a though occurred to me.

"Have you heard of the resistance?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. She eyed my suspiciously.

"What resistance?"

"The one that's resisting the Tu'lan control of Ok'Kasis. The Warriors of Irene, to be exact."

"No... I haven't."

"Well... if you choose to make your way to then, they will probably be able to help you. With your mission, that is." I took a small gold disk, with Irene's relic carved into it, out from my pocket. "If you give this to a member, they're required to help you." I pressed the charm into her palm. She nodded, and accepted my gift.

We turned the corner, and stepped into the market. In the middle of a sweep of the marketplace, my jaw fell open. Standing there, bent over an unconscious, purple haired girl, was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She had long, dark hair, with purple and red streaks in it. She looked like a goddess.

"Umm.... Cooler? Do women usually sprout wings here?" Rainie asked me.

"What n-" I cut off, seeing the huge white wings that extended out from the girl's back. I shook my head. She really did look like a goddess.

A/N

I know this is late. This is the first chance I've had to sit down & write all week.

Also, I'm starting a new tradition. Hidden inside the text for people who read the whole thing is a small, simple instruction. The first five people to complete that will get a shout out in the next chapter of the same book.
