“Ugh, someone please go get that door.”

Alex’s disgruntled voice echoed in the kitchen. The girls had pulled an all-nighter. They weren’t preparing actual food, only snacks and drinks – but still the volume of the items on the menu was still daunting.

She was retrieving the dishes from the dish-washer, and uniformly stacking them into three separate piles based on their sizes. Meanwhile, behind her on the cabinet – Ariel was tending to the lemonade – while Alice was working on the all-acclaimed – cookies that the 10th grade knew her for; Just by the entrance of the kitchen and westwards of where the dish-washer was mounted.

Shelby and Emily on the other hand, were running late.

“I know someone heard me.”

Ariel grunted, withdrawing her hands from the blender. “Okay, okay. Alice watch this for me. If I’m not back in the next three minutes, put it off.” She declared, before dashing out of the kitchen and downstairs to let their visitors in, whom had been ringing the bell for the past minute.

Alex pushed the stack of the biggest plates aside, and commenced arraigning them on a portable saucer tray. “They better be the ones arriving. They are already late enough already as it is.”

“They aren’t late, Alex.” Alice groaned, adjusting some knobs on the cooker. “It’s just seven minutes after seven.”

“And do you know, how much we could have accomplished – in those seven minutes.” Alex snapped, commencing work with a smaller stack of plates. “I’m not a savant for punctuality but in this sort of situation, every single minute counts. BTW, where the hell is Joey?”

“He said he had to take a break.”

What!

There were times in her life she knew she was being overtly harsh; and unnecessary mean but good Lord, this boy knew how much work was on ground and yet for some reason, he thought he had the authority to waltz in and out of work of his own free-will.

How could they blame anyone for being over the edge, when they had the sort of sibling she had.

“He had to take a break!” Alex groaned in dismay, almost hurling the stack of plates crashing to the floor as she spun around. “Oh, this dude must be way in over his head. In two hours – our mates would begin to arrive, in three hours Tracy’s folk would be arriving also. We aren’t even through with half of the stuff on the menu, and suddenly he had to take a break.”

Alice sighed, wiping her hands with a napkin before proceeding to switching off the blender. “Look, life would be a lot easier right now – if you could just find Joey and tell him just that. Instead of wasting your time here, yelling at me.”

Alex finally put the stack away, and began to fret. “Oh, God I really do not have time for this. But seriously, how could one person be so infuriating and annoying.”

Alice scowled. “Oh, yeah sure. Makes sense coming from you.”

“Oh, please I don’t need your ‘holier than thou’ attitude right now.” Alex retorted in return. “There is just so much work left to do, and Joey keeps on messing about. One time, he is taking a pizza break, then its sushi and sometimes coffee break. I mean – coffee in the damn morning Alice! This is really getting on my nerves.”
