Chapter Ten (Remi's POV)
Don't get me wrong, I couldn't be happier that Kyler was giving me a chance.
I didn't want to leave. I didn't want to do anything, but lay there all day, holding him in my arms. It was better than I imagined. He fit perfectly in my arms, his body pressed against mine. I wanted him to forever stay there, but we weren't reaching a relaxation period until Ash was dead.
Kyler was determined to kill him.
And whatever Kyler wanted, I would help him achieve, especially if it meant fighting off the demons that have haunted him all this time.
To give him peace, I would gladly kill the man that tormented him.
We were moving quickly, Vivian and Ty on the bikes with extra clothes while the rest of us moved on ahead in our true forms. Kyler moved quickly ahead of our group, his tail swishing and his paws beating at the ground excitedly.
I could practically hear the adrenaline pulsing in his veins as he rushed to the area we designated as Ash's final resting place. Surprisingly, it was hard to keep up with Kyler. I had always assumed cats were slower than wolves, but apparently not. Luc, his true form being that of a large russet wolf with grayish paws, flashed me a look that said to contain my mate, but there was no way.
Kyler was racing toward freedom and I would be a fool to stop him.
We finally reached Black Lake about an hour later. With everyone turning back to humans and throwing on just a t-shirt and pants, we got to work setting up the trap.
"You guys need to make sure you're further back," Kyler reminded us, his eyes scanning the darkness in a way that most people would see as insane, but we judged it as well-placed paranoia, "Mask your scents heavily. Dirt, mud, anything. Ash is smart. He'll probably pick up on something if we drag this out too long. He'll already be suspicious that I'm giving myself up."
"Isn't that what he wanted?" Sylvian asked as he finished dumping out the last gas tank. He was the really odd one out in our family. We were known for our dark hair and green eyes, while Sylvian somehow ended up with dirty blonde hair and blue eyes.
"I'm a stubborn jackass." Kyler replied cheerfully.
"Trust me, I know." I added. Kyler snorted, then held his hand out, silently demanding for a lighter. I patted at my pockets, then withdrew a red lighter, handing it to him. He flicked it a few times, watching the flame dance in the gentle summer breeze before he nodded.
"All righty then. Let's do this. I'll just hang out here. The rest of you hide. No scents. If I smell you, Ash smells you. And you all stink." Kyler said. Vivian sniffed under her arm and Rosabel smacked her before we whirled around and bolted into the woods.
I stayed the closest, though. I wasn't about to give Ash freedom to hurt Kyler.
I was Plan B.
I ducked low, scooping up handfuls of dirt and smearing it on my clothes, tossing myself across the ground before taking position on the lowest branch of an oak. I crouched low, watching as Kyler paced, kicking up leaves and fiddling with the jeans that were just a bit too big for him.
His silver eyes glinted in the moonlight and even though he was human, I could see the leopard in him showing as he stalked around, eyes darting around and searching the trees.
We were hidden for at least fifteen minutes before Kyler stopped dead in his tracks, then turned to face the woods. He cupped his hands around his mouth.
"Hey! I'm waiting for you! Get your ass out here before I haul it out!" He yelled. I narrowed my eyes toward the woods, watching the breeze ruffle the leaves that whispered gently. Not more than two minutes later did a figure appear and my blood ran cold.
