Chapter Three: Spying Raven
After giving me a tour of the school and dorm, the head-mistress guided me to my room and dropped the key into the palm of my hand from her long fingers.
“Enjoy your time here, Miss Kates,” headmistress said with a smile stretched across her young face. Her honey coloured hair framed her oval face before she turned and left me to explore.
As I opened the door and stepped inside, my eyes went wide seeing what I had to call my own. I had expected a tiny thing to call a room. But instead I got a room the size of a medium lounge room, designed as a back-to-front L.
The flooring was vinyl. A fuchsia pink rug was positioned under a small white table with a pink flax rose in its centre.
With a bounce I flopped down on the double-bed set in a corner pushed to the wall. The mattress snuggled around my frame, feeling as though someone was giving me on massive hug.
Across from the bed was a sink and mirror; beside it was what looked like huge wardrobe. On the far end, opposite to the door was a long wooden desk the size of the window above it. I couldn’t believe I actually felt excited! I was out on my own for the first time ever—why hadn’t I seen the good side of this before now?

In the morning while getting ready for class I realised I hadn’t unpacked my make-up bag. After searching the bathroom, I did a thorough search through the car before calling Bruce, and sure enough I had left it at home.
I paid a visit to the head-mistress, who thankfully was kind enough to allow me to go home during the mandatory—for boarding-school students—sports hour after school. I hated sport and me participating in sport only made my hate for it grow.
I had high hopes for the day but it wasn’t impressive as I had hoped nor found the school. Hours were disguised as days as the woman who was supposed to be the teacher droned on. I soon forgot what class I was attending. The classroom was small, so it was impossible to fall asleep unnoticed—not that I didn’t try.
Two minutes after the bell finally rang, I stood shoving my overfull bag into my locker, hoping to get back home before the predicted snow set in, when a small group came down the hall. Wearing knee-high-leather-stilettos, a girl with short chocolate hair had her arm wrapped around the lean shoulders of one of two guys. He was considerably taller than her. A tight short-sleeve shirt clung to his toned torso. Black jeans and motorbike boots tied the outfit together.
The other guy’s jaw muscles were clenched. His appearance was that of a punk rocker, wearing a V neck vest-like shirt with boots almost reaching his knees. His dyed black hair fell over his eyes. He reminded me of Ryan only without mascara.
Beside me a locker banged, startling my nerves. I glanced to the side to see a girl leaning back against one of the lockers. Her thin freckled arms were wrapped around text books and notebooks.
“Aren’t they adorable?” She contently sighed. Her eyes turned dazed behind her glasses. The tone of her hair picked up the pink-red in her pimply, freckled skin.
“Who are they?”
“Melissa, Jared and Jayson beside her; they’re the ‘it’ group. They stick together, not speaking to anyone that isn’t amongst their group. Jaiden’s like a big brother to Mel.” Her brace’s grazed her lips with the movement of her mouth. Poor thing…
Jaiden’s piercing blue eyes were fixed to my face as he passed by. Feeling compelled, I stared down at my shoes wondered what was so … intimidating about him.
