As I inched my way into the apartment. My eyes were wide as I searched the room before me. I tip toed almost afraid to make any noise. Suddenly out of the corner of my eyes I saw something. Turning quickly to face whoever or whatever it was I cried out at the site of it.
It was my brother. He carried the large box towards me a huge grin on his face.
"A little bit Jumpy Ash?" He said as he shook his head.
I held my hand over my chest covering my racing heart that felt like it was going to jump into my throat.
"Cody, how did you get up here before us? How did you get in here?"
My mind was reeling with questions. He set the box down and after brushing his hands on his pants, he seemed satisfied with where he set it. He then looked back at me.
"Ash, I took the stairs, and the door was unlocked. So I figured maybe you and mom were already in here. But the apartment was empty when I came in."
I was at a loss for words for a moment as I let what he just said sink in.
Just as I was about to come back with a smart remark I saw the door being pushed open and heard my mothers distinctive laugh.
"Oh my, I must have left the door unlocked when I was here earlier today." Mrs. Anderson said as she peeked her head around the door and glanced at me and Cody with a smile.
"I just scared Ash, I thought she was literally going to jump out of her skin." Cody said as he began to laugh. "Mom you should have saw the look on her face. It would have been a kodak moment."
I rolled my eyes. "I can't help it, he left the door open. I had no idea it was him in here. I expected the door to be locked."
My mother smirked and seemed to not care that he had frightened me. Instead she set her bags down and motioned towards the door.
"Don't forget that your bags are out there in the hall Ash." meaning she wanted me to get them into the apartment pronto.
I gave my brother a dirty look letting him know that payback would not be pretty. I then walked out into the hallway and picked up my luggage. I carried it into the living room all while mumbling to myself under my breath because I was so angry that Cody had made fun of me.
I walked right past my mother and Mrs. Anderson and headed through the kitchen and towards the hall that led to the bedrooms. I chose the one with the window seat.
It had access to the front of the building and I loved to read, so it would be a perfect spot for me. I looked around the room after setting my stuff in the closet. I could imagine my furniture among other things in there and it gave me a smile.
Maybe it wouldn't be so bad living here, though it would take some getting used to.
I walked around, glancing at the bare walls. I couldn't dedide which one would be best for my main picture.
I stopped suddenly as I noticed the small hole in the wall. I stared at it for a few moments before I glanced back at the door to my room. Wondering if I should attempt it or not.
I licked my lips and stared back at the hole. It felt like I needed to know. And suddenly found myself crouching down a bit to look it over. As I put my eye up to it I could see into the apartment next door. Apartment 109.
I could see that it was left at it had been before the tenants were found dead. The room was covered in a layer of dust. But I could clearly see the bed with the blankets still on it, The doll that apparently was left abandoned. The small table beside the bedside with the lamp on top. A dollhouse and doll carriage in one corner. A small table in the middle of the room that was clearly set up for tea. A few stuffed animals sat in the chairs still waiting for the tea that they would never recieve from the little girls imaginary tea pot.
