I sat there for what seemed like hours, but it was only minutes. I felt numb and my mouth was completely dry. I finally pushed myself off the bed but hesitated as my foot touched the floor. I drew it back quickly and stared down at the bed ruffle that was on my bed. I felt my heart racing. I felt like I was four years old and was afraid of the monster that lived under my bed.
In fact it was not the monster I feared but the ghost of the little girl who used to live next door. Finally seeming to have the nerve I stood up and ran to my bedroom door. I had the feeling as if someone was indeed chasing me. I reached for the door handle, twisted and tugged.
Nothing happened. It felt like the door was locked. But there was no lock on the door. How could it be that it wouldn't open. I stared at my hand willing the door to open, but my stare showed that I was dumbfounded.
I heard the same soft laughter that I heard earlier come from behind me. I closed my eyes tightly and tried not to freak out as I slowly opened my eyes widely and turned around to face her.
She stood there swaying back and forth, her hands held behind her back, with a sweet smile on her lips. "I hope you have been listening to what I have been saying." she said softly as the smile faded and she gazed at me with a serious expression.
I nodded slowly."He's coming, and I better lock my doors."
She smiled. "There is more." she said. She then pulled her hands from behind her and raised it up to show me. Five fingers, and then Six. "He's gonna get you in a fix." she sang with that sickening tone once more.
She raised another two fingers. "Seven, Eight you better not stay up late." she sang as she shook her head. Then once again two fingers went up. "Nine, Ten. He is not your friend." With that her eyes went wide.
The lights flickered and there was a scream that filled the room, making me bring my hands up to cover my ears. I closed my eyes tightly. My entire body trembled. I was afraid to open my eyes, afraid of what was happening. The lights came back on and my door slowly opened up a bit. I felt it bump me which made me open my eyes in fright.
I brought my hands down and glanced around the room to once again find myself alone. I turned back and glanced at the door, no one stood there, but there it sat open. Letting me see into the hallway. I walked over and grabbed the handle, pulling the door open wider.
I stepped out into the hall. My parents were busy unpacking once more now that the lights were on. They stood in the kitchen, just a few feet away. My father glanced at me from where he stood in front of the stove. "Are you alright Ashlynn? We thought you were asleep since we never heard anything from your room when the lights went out."
I licked my lips before trying to speak. "I had my ipod on. The music helped me to stay calm. My room is all unpacked. Where is Cody?"
My dad nodded my way. "He went to bed, said he had a headache and needed to lay down."
I looked to the door to my brothers room which was across from mine. I wanted to explain to my parents what I saw in my room and the warning I was given, but I didn't have the words to express it and knew that if I told them that they would not believe me anyways.
"Ok. I said softly. "If you don't need any help tonight I think I'm gonna get some sleep. So I can help more tomorrow. Is that ok?"
My mother spoke up from the otherside of the kitchen. Where I could not see her. "That's fine sweetheart. See you in the morning."
I gave a half smile and waved to my dad. "goodnight mom." I said softly.
Before they could reply I disappeared into my room and closed the door. I climbed into bed and layed there for a moment glancing around the room. Taking a deep breath. I whispered "Its all in your head Ash, just go to sleep. It will be a better day tomorrow."
I reached out and turned out the lamp. Snuggling into my blankets. It didn't take long before my breathing became steady and I fell into a deep restful sleep. It was surprising with all the events that happened on this day, the day that I moved into my new home.
