Chapter Four
"I'm bored!" Sandra whined for the millionth time. Sophia groaned. Everyone had been sitting nicely around the campfire and talking amongst themselves except for Sandra who felt the need to complain every five seconds. Whether she was cold or hot or bored she made her feelings known to all. "I'm-"
"oh my god. Shut up!" Sophie snapped. "If you're bored or cold or warm do something about it!" she shrieked in her younger sister's face.
Sandra blinked. "Let's play tag!" she suggested. Sophia rolled her eyes at the childish game. Thinking back to the last time she had played with her old friend. She was ten and it was a cold night. Their soggy snowsuits no longer kept out the cold. Sophie was awkwardly sitting in the snow across from Gabe, waiting for her parents to come out of the bar so they could go back to the cottage. Then she felt a shove from behind her. Zach, Gabe's youngest brother yelled : "you're it!" Sophie jumped and tackled Gabe, repeating his brothers words. They spent the next twenty minutes slapping each other, tagging each other.
Sophia smiled at the memory before she was lightly slapped by Michael. She frowned and searched for Gabe who was hiding behind a tall tree. She ran towards it and grabbed nothing but a shirt before slamming into the tree. "Ow. " she rubbed her head in pain as Gabe laughed, his ocean eyes sparkling in harmony with the sound.
"I see you till got two left feet. " Gabe smirked before helping her up from the forest floor. "I guess some things never change."
Sophie frowned at him and shoved him. "You're it." She steamed and took off in the opposite direction, running as fast as she possibly could. Sophia heard him behind her and sped up and made a sharp turn in a different direction. She turned to see him sliding into a bush. Laughing, she started climbing a tree.
"Sophia! Be careful!" Samara yelled at her daughter.
Gabe stood at the bottom of the tree and looked up. "And still a little monkey." Sophie shrugged and smirked, dangling her legs over the tree branch. "You know, you're going to come down here sooner or later."
"Nah. I think I could sleep up here. It seems pretty comfortable." Sophie leaned against the trunk of the tree.
"Gabe, just tag me." Michael said to his brother tapping him. Gabe brushed him off. Michael frowned as he walked to stand next to Sandra. He glanced at her. Sandra pursed her lips and shook her head, humoured by her sister and Gabe's behavior.
"You know, if you don't come down. I might just have to come up and get you." Gabe threatened.
"Oh, I'm so scared!" Sophia remarked sarcastically.
"You asked for it!" Gabe grabbed on the first branch and heaved himself onto it. He started to slowly stand and then it gave out underneath him. He shrieked like a girl and frantically grabbed onto the branch above. Sophia started laughing uncontrollably. "Careful, you don't want to fall too." Gabe warned her as she got dangerously close to slipping.
"Oh, I'm fine. But, I think you're about to slip." Sophia pointed and the slowly breaking branch. Gabe's eyes widened and he dropped down from the branch and ran aside just in time to watch it tumble to the ground. "Well that was close." Sophie giggled and started to come down from the tree. She groaned, "How am I supposed to get down now?" And as she said it she slipped from the branch she was on and plummeted to the ground. She let out a screech and then Gabe caught her. Like some cliche romance movie. Sophia's cheek burned in a rosy blush and she up at Gabe as he planted her on her feet. To her, it seemed as if the world around them had stopped. She was so sure that he's going to kiss her and so when he turned away and left, he left her waiting for something that she thought she would never get.
