Chapter 1:
Summer's POV

Beads of sweat formed on my face as I walked out the building. I tugged my sweatshirt up just above my wrist, I could see me bruises getting more purple by the second, not that I was surprised. My single abusive father always did this to me, but I can't say that I don't feel the pain anymore because that would be a lie.

I heard a mumble of "Sorry's" and "Excuse me's" as my stick thin arms got slammed against the lockers. They couldn't see the pain in my bright blue eyes because my light brown bangs cover my right eye. I didn't want to change my hair, because the only thing I got out of change was my dad.

I was walking come and felt a spot getting damp on the hood of my jacket and looked up. It's a mystery to me of why its raining, considering it's the first day of summer vacation. I open the door of my two story house and set my backpack on the wooden floor, it's echoes meaning that my dad isn't home. 'Yes, he's not home' I think to myself. I walk up the stairs and change into a more comfortable outfit and plug my earbuds into my phone and I suddenly find myself in a world where everything is perfect.

I get interrupted when my alarm blast on, signaling its 8.30 pm. I look out my window and see him outside, waving. If your wondering, the boy's name is Kai Dallas, he's 19 years old, like me but 1 month older. The reason I know this is because we've been best friends ever since he's moved here. And his dad also abuses him, so that makes us much more closer. I tug my short sleeved white and pink polka dotted shirt over my head, I don't have to hide my bruises from him, given he also has many of them. I pull up my black leggings and slip on my high top converse and stuff pillows under my blanket, so my dad will think I'm sleeping. I climb the branches one by one out the window, Kai standing under me unless I fall. As always I land on my feet perfectly and we run to our usual spot, an evergreen tree that gives just enough shade for the both of us.

We flatten the shiny green grass as we sit. "We should run away" Kai suddenly blurts out. "What?!" I look at and whisper yell, indicating that this is one of the worst ideas known to man. "I said we should run away. Ya know, you and me in my car, and not letting anyone in the way." He continues in. I begin to think that this isn't such a bad idea. Our parents don't care about us, we're old enough to make our own decisions, and we've already graduated high school. "Well there's nothing to lose, but we have to plan it out first." I reason. "I already did." He says as he pulls out a crisp map out of his backpack, and sets in down on the ground, running his hand across it to make it flat. I spot a route highlighted from Arizona to New York, my dream state. "Woah" was all I could say "I know right? We could use my car, since I've already bought us 12 gallons of gas. And we could get some money from our parents and they won't be able to hit us or tell us off since we'll be gone by the time they forgive it out." He stops for a breath. "And you have 4 humongous suit cases that we could fill with everything we need like clothes, down food, and the money of course." "You know, your not as stupid as I thought" I said. "Wow thanks Sum." I laughed as I got up from the grass. "So when does this plan commence?" I moved my hands dramatically as I said 'commence'. "We leave on Tuesday, so that gives you today, the weekend and some of Tuesday morning to pack." "Thanks captain obvious" I interrupt. "Anyways..." He continues with a playful but annoyed look on his face. "We leave at exactly 7.00 pm. And I..."

Kai continued on as I thought to myself 'Gosh Kai is always so precise with these things." I was snapped out of my thoughts when I felt a light shove on my shoulder. "Did you listen to anything I was saying Summer?" He asked. "Yeah you said that we leave at leave at 7.00 pm." I say matter of factly. "And?.." He questioned. "Uh... That I'm the best person in the world and I'm awesome?" I joke. "No," Kai laughs. "I also said that if there's a change in plans, your supposed to text me. Okay?" "Okay!" I answer.

I glance at the screen, and shriek. The screen reads 9:41. I was here waaay longer than I was supposed to. I grab my cross body bag of the branch quickly and started to run down the sidewalk. "See ya tomorrow!" Kai yelled. "BYE!l I yelled and waved over my shoulder. I swiftly ran across the street and stopped in front of my house. I noticed that the window that lead to my room was closed. My breathing got heavy as I realized that I was going to have to face my father. I placed my thin cold fingers on the door matt and picked it up, laying my fingers down on the copper colored key. I slapped the matt back down, dust flying everywhere, including my lungs. I coughed a few times as I slid the key into the hole. It seemed like an eternity until I built up the courage to open the door.

As I stepped in, my body froze and the blood in my veins turned cold as my eyes settled on the tall figure hunched over the dinner table. Hands flat, chest moving at a slow pace, and eyes boarding into me.
