It's Math right now. Mr. Bernard just assigned us a project and it's meant to be done in pairs. Yay for me, the girl no one ever talks to! And so the pairing begins with cheers and groans.
We're halfway through when Sean, my ex-best friend and the world's biggest idiot, screams "I want to be partners with Loser Lane."
Yep, that's my name in case you were wondering. Loser Lane because my name is Lane and Loser because I study. Literally just because of that. All I have ever gotten from him is all types of verbal insult but I'm used to it.
Now this is the time when I go silent because if I ever contradict anything that anyone from the 'Fantastic Four' says, I will be dead. They will either egg my house or put up false pictures of me all over the school. So, I shut up and wait for my horrible fate to dawn upon me as always.
"We all know why you want to do that, it's because you need someone as smart as her to pass this class right?" This comes off as a shock to me, the fact that someone has spoken up to a member of the 'Fantastic Four' is a big deal. Turns out that the guy who spoke back is the new kid, or better known as, Kent Weston. He has green eyes that could pierce right through a person and messy brown locks of luscious hair that can't seem to stop falling over his forehead, which makes him do this cool-sweep thing that turns the girls around him into high-speed fans with the 'OH's' and 'AH's'.
He joined mid-term and apparently everything about him is oh-so-mysterious that he's the hot topic of the school even though it's January in Pennsylvania. Get it a hot topic in the cold? I'm so funny, right? (Note the sarcasm.)
I really do wonder what made him speak up that way, maybe experience, maybe the rush of adrenaline or maybe just plain pity for me. I really don't know why a guy like him would waste time pitying my miserable fate so I scratch that option out. So, I'm here waiting for the next blow and it's another surprise. Gasp!
"You know what he is right which is why you Kent will be partners with Lane and that's final." Mr. Bernard says pointedly looking at Sean. Oh My God! I'm so excited. (Note the- you know what to note.)
After the pairing is done and after Kent and I have received death glares from Sean, everyone disperses to their partners and I wait. Kent comes and sits right in front of me. I raise one eyebrow at him.
"I don't know why you're wasting your life by being partners with me but – oh well!" I say being absolutely enthusiastic about it. Not. This guy is going to be their next target and I know this for a fact.
"How am I wasting my life?" he asks with a small pout. He looks really adorable right now but I shall abandon all such thoughts of him.
"By being partners with me which will, in turn, make you the new target of the 'Fantastic Four' and thus, you shall end up on the front page of our school newspaper doing some unspeakable deed."
"All that just because I talk to you?"
"Not just because of that. It's also because you will be the first person to talk to Loser Lane. Don't you get it? It's useless talking to me, it will only end up with you being in trouble. I'm saying it for your own good."
"Well, then I'm a sucker for trouble."
It's really ironic how I can hear Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' ringing in my ears for the rest of the day.
