Kent

I was sick on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and even Monday. And usually I would love skipping school on any day especially Monday but I had this weird itch within me when I thought about school. Of course, I wouldn't be missing anything important other than, Math.

Yeah, I know the last thing you might be expecting me to say when I'm sick in bed but I was thinking about Lane. And even the thought of my name must not have occurred to her.

Right now, I'm going to enter Math and the thought in my head right now is:

Did she notice the fact that I was gone?

I walk in and before sitting down, I walk up the Bernard, the professor. I had to show him the slip that had the details of my fever written because he wanted proof.

"Ah, Mr. Weston finally decided to show up! What a lovely surprise!" Bernard says sarcastically and honestly the only reason I attend this class is so that I can see her.

"I had fever and hence why I took a leave," I say with disinterest. I don't know how I feel someone look up at me in my peripheral vision.

I go back and sit in my place, which is incidentally next to hers. As I plonk down in my chair, I turn to look at her hunched over, figuring something out and scribbling rapidly.

I want to say 'hi' to her or anything actually but people are bound to stare and honestly I don't care but it's my excuse for my cowardice.

Class starts and as usual, I really can't focus or understand really. Bernard left us to do a couple of sums and I did most of them correctly, I reached this one and I wanted to know whether it was correct or not. I turned to Gavin behind me but before I could say anything, "Why were you absent?"

"Really, mate."

His reply to that was a raise of one eyebrow.

"I. Was. Sick."

"Okay, what's the problem?"

"What did you get for question four?"

"Skipped it, mate."

I turn to Lane and she's scribbling yet but this time, I think she's actually doing Math. I want to ask her but I'm quite nervous though I have no idea why.

"Um, Lane what answer did you get for question four?"

She looks at me then at her book and it's as if she's on pause for three seconds straight. She shakes her head a bit then clears her throat and softly says, "Negative three."

I look at my answer and obviously, it isn't the same so I wonder, "Where did I go wrong?"

I push my desk and chair close to her and it screeches loud enough for the whole class to hear. Everyone looks at me but I look at Lane and she's nervously staring at her book so I look at her book and find out that I missed something.

"Oh, it was a cube not a square! That stupid cube." I mutter.

"Cubes can be quite stupid..." she says with a smile.

And I smile too.

Because in this moment, I didn't really care about everybody, I just cared about the fact that she smiled at me.
