Save me, save me, save me
I can't face this life alone
Save me, save me, save me
I'm naked and I'm far from home
— save me, queen

I HAD NEVER BEEN A FIGHTER, but in my quest to find salvation I had no doubt left people in my ruin to be branded with the punishment that was meant for me. This was guilt that pulled me down like heavy anchors attached to a powerful ship until I inevitably drowned in the sound of agonizing screams. The cost of my freedom was another life, scarred by the merciless hands of another human being. All I wanted was to taste the bittersweet tang of hope, free from the corruption and torment my mind had been bestowed with, and yet I was naïve to think that freedom came without a cost.

I had never known just how willing human beings were to go to seek freedom, yet I had learned that quite quickly. Escaping was easy, but the doubt, the fear of what to do next was far more crippling. Where do you go when you no longer have a home? My weary mind could not rest until I found an answer to that question, although, I also believed a home would never be something within arm's reach. To be taunted by the what-ifs of life was the most harrowing thing.

The heavy drum of truck tires in need of some air kept me awake, my head bounced against the window of the backseat as I watched the world slip by with fuzzy vision. The road was void of any life except all bodies present in the moving vehicle, yet the thick canopy of trees that surrounded the road waved in the wind as if acknowledging our arrival. The Sanctuary was far behind us now, although I still glanced behind the truck every so often, as if the physical manifestation of my demons would be creeping behind us.

"We're running low on gas," Fiona mumbled under her breath causing me to perk my head up. When we stole this truck, we knew the possibility of not getting as far as we wanted, but to be left in the wide-open road with no life in sight was a sick joke played upon us. I frowned but said nothing.

"You think we can make it to that one gas station up the road?" Ben inquired. Although he was young, several years younger than me nonetheless, his forehead was adorned by deep creases of frustration. He and Fiona exchanged a glance before Fiona turned her head back towards the road.

"Fuck if I know," She responded. She was quiet for a moment before she sighed, "It's possible. I bet the place is picked clean though."

"Yeah. But it's worth a shot," Ben said.
