Luke woke up in bed alone again. It was still night time and according to the bedside alarm, it was just after 2am. The light in the bathroom was off. Frowning, he got up and padded out of the bedroom barefoot. He checked each bedroom in turn, then went downstairs. The kitchen was dark, as was the living room. He was about to go check the garage when a breeze fluttered the sheers in the living room window.
He stepped onto the deck. The night was cool and crisp. The stars laid out like glittering diamonds on a black velvet sky. The ocean hummed and waves rolled gently onto the beach. There sat a figure looking small against the beach. The wind blew against her, fluttering her hair up and down, the wild length out of its usual bun to brush the sand where she sat.
Luke approached her on silent feet. She appeared so deep in thought that she didn't hear him approach her, startling her when he sank to the sand behind her, his legs on each side of her own. Wrapping his arms around her, he held her close. She was stiff in the circle of his embrace but slowly the tension left her body and she melted against him. He buried his face in the smell of her, the security of feeling her safe in his arms. The sense of belonging was visceral. This was where she belonged, where he needed her to be. Always.
They sat that way for a long time. Both knowing that talking would ruin the illusion of peace and contentment. They had problems, but they could wait.
He had no idea how long they sat there in silence but when the wind drew goosebumps from her skin and she shivered from the cold, he drew her to her feet and herded her into the house and up the stairs into bed. She let him lead her willingly, closing her eyes and turning to her side. He climbed in behind her and pulled her into his front. She sighed deeply and he felt her body go soft as sleep took her under.
He lay for a long time staring at the darkness, his mind too frantic for sleep. He couldn't lose her, no matter what they faced. No matter if she hated him now. He would convince her to stay, to let him make her love him again because no matter what; he couldn't lose her.
