Over the next several months, Sarah worked hard at getting her life back together. Much of that recovery was due to the companionship and a growing romance with Gunther Hoffmann. Once again he diligently proved to Sarah to be a man of his word in all respects. There were moments in the refurbishing and painting of her apartment where the two stopped at the day's industry, just to take in the serenity of her ocean-view and kiss. And there were later simple outings in the greater San Diego area where Gunther made her breathe in joy and actually laugh again.
Sarah Bertram had been born into sizable wealth, but never came to expect it, and even avoided the grandiose lifestyle her parents loved to project for themselves. And while early-on, making the terrible mistake of falling in love with Jess Danford—a man who represented all that she once held in contempt--she paid for that lesson greatly and tragically through the loss of her best friend. Gunther, who was also independent and self-made, proved time and again, through his past heroics and sincerity of character, to be different. Possessing that down-to-earth inner core which Sarah, over time, had finally come to trust again.
As the two became more enamored of each other the following year, Hoffmann elected to give up his frenetic international investigations of high profile criminals. He opted wisely to size-down his business and its potential for danger, while vowing to settle into San Diego permanently. There he had taken on a job locally for successful P.I. firm handling fraudulent business and less dangerous cases. This was much to the liking of Sarah, who, keeping her profession as a speech therapist, cherished their more mainstream and less than remarkable existence. The two began to take great pleasure in their new life, committing fully to each other, and agreed to marry the following summer.
Sarah Bertram had finally learned that wishing for that 'greener field' in life was actually possible to realize. And that through the fusion of enormous pleasure and pain—it could ultimately come true.
