She'd been poking at his insecurities all day. She surely didn't know, but he knew the others did. He knew they didn't want to get in trouble with her, so he wouldn't hold it against them, but the fact that he hadn't been having a good day to begin with made it that much worse.
Allura had always had a way with words, something that made people cower in fear of what she could do. She could do anything she wanted with that voice, from seduction to assembling an army, she could have what she wanted when she wanted it, that is, if you aren't the Galra Empire.
But what she didn't know was that those words could hurt, and he knew she didn't mean to, but she'd just been making him feel worse. She's been throwing around phrases like, "Lance, you need to try harder" and "Lance, even an Altean newborn could do better," but only after one specific comment did Lance snap.
"Lance, if you don't improve your skills we might need to find your replacement!" The paladins froze. Lance's eyes were glued to the woman and the others were boiling with anger. Allura had only just realized what she said, but she stuck with it, not making any effort to apologize. Lance's face distorted with mixed emotions as he confronted the Altean.
"My, My replacement, huh..?" Hunk's eye's widened.
"No, Lance, don't do this.."
Pidge knew what he was getting at. "Lance, you don't need to-"
"No! No, guys! Let me do this!" His two best friends closed their mouths. "Allura, I have one question for you. Do you really think that I just relax and slack off all the time and do no work whatsoever?" The woman nodded in response.
"Yes, I have never seen you actually trying and focusing on the training exercises. And the mind meld activities are difficult on your side because you can't focus on anything," she stated matter-of-factly. The other paladins scoffed in disapproval.
"Well, Allura," his voice was seeping venom. "I'll have you know that I have spent the majority of my nights training, and not getting the so-called "Beauty Sleep" you accuse me of getting. I sleep late because I don't get any sleep before! And, And the fact that you would actually think about re-replacing me...." Lance's vision blurred with tears. He swiped at his face to stop the tears from falling.
"I'm trying, Princess! I'm trying really hard to reach your standards! But, But it seems I'll just never be good enough for you..." The others just wanted to go over and hug Lance, but they knew that he needed this, so they let him continue. "I'm trying to focus! But that's not easy for me! And do you know why, Allura!?" Lance's ocean blue eyes were glaring straight at the Altean princess.
Allura shook her head slowly, suddenly feeling bad about every bad thing she's said to the boy.
"I can't focus because I have something called "Attention Deficiency Hyperactivity Disorder," which makes it hard to focus on anything. And you know what else? I'm trying to be good enough! I come in here and practice on my own, night after night, and I go back to my room, and, and cry myself to sleep! I c-can't even get a good night's sleep because I'm trying so hard! I'm sorry that I'm such a fucking disappointment, Allura! I'm sorry I don't meet your standards! I'm sorry that my insecurities get in the way of your damn precious bonding and training time! I'm sorry that my dumbass, hyperactive brain get's in the way! I'm sorry I can't be who you want! So go find, my replacement, it's not like I didn't see this coming a mile away! I'll just go kill m-myself and be on my way..." The boy collapsed to the ground, curling in on himself to let his emotions continue to flow free.
The rest of the paladins huddled around Lance, like a protection circle, and comforted the boy. Unknown to Allura, the Paladins of Voltron were in a Polyamorous relationship, hence why they were so defensive. Lance had spilled everything to them one day in the common room, where they were all sharing secrets.
Shiro and Keith got Lance out of the training room, loving and comforting him along the way, while Pidge and Hunk stayed behind to hear out Allura's apology.
"So?" Pidge put her hand on her him, eyes sharp as blades. Hunk looked as if he was ready to throw Allura out of the airlock into Galra hands, but he knew that would be wrong.
Allura struggled to find words. "I-I had no idea, I-... I feel so bad. Please tell Lance I'm sorry, I'm sure he won't want to talk to me..." Hunk looked he in the eye.
"You can tell him yourself, later, but right now, Pidge, we have important business to attend to." Hunk turned away, fuming, with Pidge by his side calming him down.

Allura walked to the common room, trying to find the Paladins to formally apologize, only to find them in a pile around Lance on the floor, sleeping peacefully. She slowly left the room, leaving them to relax in comfort together.
