I sat at the Diner table eating pancakes at 9 pm with my 4-year old daughter Makenzie who suggested that we eat pancakes for dinner tonight . I watched as Makenzie stuffed her face with pancakes laughing at the fact that she looked just like her father . He never stayed around to be in her life . As I was growing up I would always see my mother struggle being that she was a single mother . I promised myself that when I was old enough and had kids that I would be married and have a good job . I lived up to one of those goals . I own my own hair salon which is very successful .
" mommy what is my dad like? " . She asked me for the millionth time . I tell her the story every night and she won't go to sleep unless the story is told .
" well your father was a great man , there's no denying that. While I was pregnant with you he was working and providing for us . When you were in my belly he would sing to you and talk to you all night long and I think that's the reason why you talk me to death . " I said trying to sugar coat the real story as I usually do .
Well the truth is that her father was a great man up until the birth . When I had Makenzie I gained a lot of baby weight . Because of that I became less attractive to Rakim . He would stay out all night while I was at home taking care of Kenzie . I had later found out he was cheating and he had no problem admitting it . After we split he completely disappeared out of her life . That was when he became Pnb Rock . He was all over the tabloids . I always knew he would make something out of his talent .
"Well mama he seems so nice ". She said .
"Yeah  I guess so baby just eat so I can get you to bed ". I said
"Okay mama ". She said and began eating again .
I Am another statistic and there's no way to get around it . It's like black women are expected to have a "baby daddy " and have to raise a kid or be on their own struggling . I never wanted it to be like this . But I guess I lived up to the statistics and I proved them right .
