"We have a free day ahead of us, Alex," I said, grinning as I walked to get myself some breakfast.
"What do you want to do?"
Alex chewed on his cereal and thought for a moment.
"Can we do something illegal?"
I gaped at him.
"Are you alright?" I asked nervously.
"Yes," he answered with a sigh. "I'm being serious here."
"How illegal do you want to get?" I asked jokingly.
"I've always wanted to go see buildings."
I stared at him for a moment.
"I think you have the flu. Wait, let me go take your temperature."
"I'm fine, Ashley," he groaned.
"A 'fine' person wouldn't say that staring at ordinary buildings was illegal," I pointed out.
"I never said they'd be ordinary. I want to scale one, and climb to the top, and see the world from there. Besides, it's New York! Your buildings here are practically famous for just being tall."
"Oh."
"Yes. Oh."
I groaned. Whatever, I decided. "Let's do it."
My parents had been up in my butt about not spending time with family anyways. I deserved to get out a little and relax with him.
Just as we were about to leave, I heard my father.
"Wait!"
I mentally slapped myself. He would never let me do this.
"What?" I asked quickly, shoving my purse and keys behind me.
"Are you going out for a drive? Alone?"
"No," I lied. "I'm going with Alex."
"Ashley, that's completely illegal!"
Just then, my mom came downstairs. Eyebrows raised, she questioned me silently what was going on.
"Nothing, mom!" I said defensively, as Alex looked anywhere else but at us.
"Don't lie to me!"
I stared at her, appalled.
My father looked at her for a second, and said, "We are trying to sort this out right now, but you oh-so-kindly decided to step in. Now I'm kindly asking you to step out."
"Don't talk to me like that!"
My mother now looked both embarrassed and angry that the fight was spilling onto us, now. She blew out a breath.
"Honey," she said grimacing, "Let's take this somewhere else, alright?"
My dad stared defiantly back.
"All I'm saying is, she cannot and will not break the law under my household."
"Don't yell at me!"
I sucked in a shaky breath as I saw Alex quickly motion towards the door. While they were still bickering, I slowly slid out the way and calmly walked out the side door.
Once we were a good distance away, I heard my mom yell, "Where's Ashley?"
"Quick!" Alex shouted, opening up his door.
I quickly stumbled into the car and jammed my key into the peg hole.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my parents both running and screaming like lunatics in my direction, shrieking for me to stop.
