I was riding my bike back home from school. It was a Friday and I couldn't wait to get home, Leanne always made blueberry pie on Fridays. My bag was slung over my shoulder with few assignments in Geometry and History that I'll probably beg Stephanie to help me do. Then I saw something across the road.
A boy around my age with long blond hair and really really big nerd glasses was carrying a huge stack of books that seemed really really heavy for him. It was odd, he should be in year 9 or so, he was little and I don't think any teacher would give that much assignments.
He seemed to be deep in thought because he didn't see the group of boys in front of him. He bumped into them and all his books went flying, the boys turned and began to hit him really really hard. Ouch.
I turned my bike and pedalled to where the kids were.
"Hey! Stop!" I shouted, trying to ride faster.
I jumped off and ran to stop them, they finally stopped and turned to look at me.
"What do you want new boy?" The biggest boy growled
"I'll report if you don't leave, I know your faces and I can get your names" I threatened
"He's Julian's boy" the other one sneered
Julian is the Soccer captain and my pal, at least that's what he says.
They looked at each other and then reached a silent agreement to leave. However, one of the boys stepped on the nerd's glasses shattering it. I looked at the boy, he was still curled in a fetal position and his face was bruised real bad.
"Hey" I said, pulling him up "I'm Zach"
He looked up at me through squinting eyes.
"Sorry, they broke your glasses, but I can fix it for you if you want" I gathered the pieces and held them.
"That'll be lovely, thank you" he said stammering a bit.
Then he smiled, those really really genuine smiles you give when someone helps you get an A in Geometry. I hate Geometry. His eyes were a piercing green and they were shining with gratitude. What a cool kid.
I helped him gather his books and carry it.
"Are you really really going to read all this over the weekend?" I asked, it seemed impossible to me
"No, I won't" he answered blushing a bit
"Don't you have a locker at school?"
"I do" he answered and left it at that, I didn't want to seem nosy so I didn't ask anymore questions.
He stopped at a house with peeling paint and a dying garden.
"Thank you for helping me, you should get going now" he muttered not quite looking at me
"It's fine, I live just across the road, opposite you"
He looked across the road to our house and then back at me
"Oh" he then unlocked the door with a key and pushed the door in "would you like to come in?"
"Sure"
I wiped my foot on the doormat and entered. A lady in her mid thirties was sitting by the computer in a corner, there was a sofa, two single seats and a love couch in the living room with a stairway leading upstairs.
"Nate, is that you? Did you bring someone along?" The lady spoke
"Yes mom, I did" he answered
The lady stretched her cane to feel for me, I moved close to her and took her hand in mine, she was very very pretty and looked exactly like Nate
"Hi, I'm Zach and you must Nate's mother, you're really really pretty I stated and she smiled.
"You must be Cindy's son, are you a friend of Nate's?"
"Yes, we met-" I looked to him for clarification and shook his head telling me not to mention the incident "on my way home"
"Oh, that's lovely, you are Nate's very first friend! You must stay for dinner, we don't have much but I insist, your mother won't mind" she stood up and moved out through a small door I assumed was the kitchen.
"Why did you tell her that?" Nate asked suspiciously
"Tell her what? That we were friends?"
He nodded and I shrugged "well I want to be friends"
He stared at me for a moment and turned to enter the kitchen.
I pulled out my phone and quickly texted my mom to tell her were I was and to tell her to keep my slice of pie away from Nancy.
The door opened and Nate's mom came in with a tray with three plates and some food.
"Its bread and pea soup, hope you like it" she said beaming, she pulled up her chair to sit
I took a plate and scooped some soup, she passed me some bread which I collected.
"So Zach, how are you enjoying our little town?" She asked
I didn't want to seem rude so I told her it was lovely, she didn't believe me.
After the meal, I offered to help do the dishes, Nate agreed reluctantly. I finished up and picked up my bag to leave
"Thanks for the meal, I enjoyed it!" I enthused
"You're welcome Zach, do me a favour and take care of Nate, he gets a bit cuckoo at times" she said jokingly
"Okay" I shut the door behind me and crossed the road to get to my house.
"ZeeZee is home!" Nancy shouted with her lisp due to her missing front tooth.
"How was your day honey?" Stephanie asked taking my bag from me
"Good, I made a friend today"
"Friend?" Leanne asked from her spot in front of the TV "haven't you met everyone?"
"Meeting them doesn't make them my friend" I mused, everyone was Leanne's friend once you had a conversation with her
"Darling, hope you were nice to Pamela and her son?" Mom asked standing on her tiptoes to peck my cheeks
"Of course, can I have my pie please?" I fluttered my eyelids
"Pie? Did you want some? Why didn't you text me? Nancy ate it all"
I face palmed, another typical day in the Andrews household.
