Weeks passed and Nate and I grew even closer. The cafeteria stunt was long forgotten since Julian said I was 'forgiven', I was allowed to sit on their table but I didn't, all they ever talked was football, girls and parties, it was getting pretty boring. Nate on the other hand was a different story, he always had something different to tell me, from the hierarchy of Sallyville High to who was dating who to who actually invented the light bulb. He was refreshing and he was beginning to grow on me. We talked about anything and everything, except that Friday.
It was a Wednesday and they served spaghetti and meatballs. The food wasn't bad at all, it was actually good, not by Nate's standards though.
"Just great!, they're serving rocks" he said dramatically throwing his hands up
"Stop being such a drama queen, its not that bad" I told him. I grabbed my tray and went to our table. Our table, just for Nate and I.
We sat down and he was giving me to scope of the day, it turned out that the literature teacher was pregnant. I was explaining soccer strategies to Nate when I was interrupted
"Can we sit here?" A blonde girl around our age asked pulling her red haired friend along.
"Sure" Nate answered scooting over to make space for them to sit. The blonde sat beside Nate while the red hair sat beside me, she kept twirling her hair and her face was almost as red as it.
"So we were wondering if you'd like to go with us to the beach today at 6:00" the blonde said "I'm Sasha by the way"
I looked at Nate and he looked back at me, I did a funny eyebrow wiggle and he burst out laughing.
"Uhm, are you guys like together or what?" Sasha asked
"What? No!" He answered trying to hold back laughter "we'll join you guys"
"Cool" she said grabbing her friend and leaving the table
"She likes you" Nate stated his voice void of emotions
"That's weird" I chuckled but Nate didn't laugh, he went back to picking his food.
I went home alone, Nate left without me.
Dinner was tuna casserole but I just wasn't in the mood.
"Mom, can I hang out at the beach with some friends?"
"Friends?" Mom inquired going into 'mom' mode "What friends? When did you have friends other than Nate?"
"Chillax June, he's a good kid" Leanne chided
"I agree on that Lea, he's certainly not like his dad, Chris was certainly a wild one" Stephanie laughed
"True, Zach isn't a normal 16 year old, doesn't talk to girls, doesn't do drugs, doesn't go to parties, doesn't sneak out, he doesn't even swear" Leanne counted off on her fingers
"Hey, I'm normal!" I pouted at Leanne
Stephanie snorted "yeah right, let me guess, your friend happened to be the random stranger that borrowed your ruler?"
"Uhm no, random strangers that happened to join Nate and I during lunch and asked to meet at the beach" I retorted
"Was it a girl?" Leanne asked, I nodded "Finally!" she exclaimed throwing her hands in the air. It reminded me a bit of Nate and my heart sank a bit.
"Was she twirling her hair like this?" Stephanie asked pointing to Leanne who was twirling her hair comically
"Yeah" I answered thinking back to the red haired girl
"Okay okay was she fluttering her eyes like this?" Leanne asked fluttering her eyes, it was getting quite scary.
"Uhm yeah?" I wasn't so sure with Leanne looking like that
"And and and was she swinging her hips like this?" Stephanie pressed pointed to Leanne who was swinging her hips like a pendulum, I was kinda scared it was going to break or something.
"I wasn't really watching" I answered
"She likes you" Stephanie drawled and Leanne couldn't seem to sit still. Mom on the other hand was fidgeting.
"Don't go giving him crazy ideas you two!" Mom said
"Awwwn, he'll be fine, we just have to prepare him for his first date" Leanne cooed
"Its not a date, I'm going with Nate" hey that rhymes!
"Oh, Nate" Stephanie wiggled her brows and I burst out laughing. Nate.
I glanced at the time, it was 5:46 so I excused myself and headed over to Nate's house.
"Hey, are you ready?" I asked timidly, I didn't know why he got angry and I don't know if he was still angry. Maybe he was, we were meant to go to the park this evening so-
"Sure, let's go" he smiled so wide and I felt a lot more better. He was wearing beach shorts and a blue button down shirt that he left open to show white singlet, he looked really really good.
We walked in comfortable silence with the setting sun warming our backs. We arrived at the beach and looked around for Sasha and her friend. Pretty soon they appeared from nowhere clad in tiny strappy thingys.
"It was an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini" Nate sang under his breath and I laughed out loud. Gosh, my thoughts exactly.
"Hey guys!" Sasha waved "I was starting to think you guys weren't coming"
"Well here we are" I pointed out
"Yeah" Sasha drawled "so I'm gonna steal Nate for a while, byeee!" And she was off, with Nate. I rubbed at my chest, it felt like something was tugging on it really really hard.
"H-hi, I'm Ariel" she stuttered a bit
I turned to look at her, she was kinda short with freckles on her nose. Her hair was red like actual red not orange or stuff. She had cerulean blue eyes and overall she was kinda pretty, somehow.
"Ariel as in The Little mermaid?" I joked but she turned all red and started stuttering again.
"No- yeah- well I mean I'm Ariel but not from the little mermaid although my hair is red and I can swim but I'm not her I mean, I don't have six sisters and no one's named Adriana her name's actually Belle, not Belle as in the movie-" she rambled on and on and on. And I just watched, she certainly talked a lot for someone as small as she was. I liked it when Nate rambled but when she did, I just got irritated.
I suddenly noticed that people were arriving at beach, with kegs and firewood and bags. I was confused momentarily, I recognized some people from school and some I had seen around occasionally.
"Let's get this party started!" A girl screamed and ripped her bikini top off.
Ahh, that definitely explains a lot.
