The story is in Castiel's pov. Castiel follows the boys to an ice cream parlor where he realizes some things.
===================Hunting wasn't always easy. In fact, mostly it is very hard. Sometimes I wonder how Sam and Dean have not gone completely insane.
The hunt involved children which was always a sensitive thing to the boys. All of the children they tried so hard to save, well, they died in the end.
I wept.
It was my fault. If I would have put distrust in Metatron, then I would have my grace and I could have healed those children.
But no. I couldn't. So I cried.
I cried for the people I couldn't save. I cried for the times I let my family down. I cried for it all.
Sam and Dean stared at my shaking form on the dirty and bloody floor of the abandoned building. They seemed to be in awe, before Dean ran over and tried comforting me.
He spoke kind words and help me to my feet. I leaned against him as we all walked back to the car.
Once inside, I laid my head on the window and watched the left over rain race down.
"You know what?" Dean asked in a very enthusiastic voice. Sam didn't respond due to having earbuds in, so I did.
"What?" My voice was small and croaky due to the sobbing.
"This is an ice cream kinda day."
"What does that mean?"
"It's means, Castiel, that is three are going out for ice cream."
"Okay Dean." Dean informed Sam of the plan and we kept ahead for home. We had blood to clean up.
==================
The gore had been cleaned and Dean helped me pick out a good outfit to wear.
We were going to a small parlor in the next state over. The way Dean described it sounded wonderful. Like a piece of time stuck in one little shop.
For a reason I presume to be caused by pity, Sam let me take the front seat. I thanked him and settled myself into the leather chair.
We had been driving for some time and Dean had one hand on the wheel, the other resting on the seat. Now I don't know why I did what I did, but I placed my hand on his.
He immediately stiffened up and I regretted ever doing it, but he didn't take his hand away. No, what he did was much better.
He situated our hands so they were interlocked. We were now holding hands. I decided to scooch closer and I ended up resting my head on his shoulder.
He was warm. He smelled like whiskey and leather. A combination I didn't mind. He also smelled of smoke and ash, but above all, he smelled like home.
I could feel something in my stomach and something in my heart.
My stomach felt like it was flying and my heart, well, it hurt. In, a complicated way.
I looked up at Dean and he looked down at me. Then, slowly, he raised his hand to cup my cheek. Even slower, he moved my face closer to his until our lips were touching.
A thousand different feelings went off. My lips tingled, my stomach lurched, my heart seemingly exploded. It felt amazing. It felt wonderful. It felt right.
From that exact moment, I knew every feeling I had. I knew.
I love Dean Winchester. From the moment I pulled him from hell it was sealed. His fate. My fate. Our fate.
We eventually released for air. We looked into each other's eyes and Dean smiled. Not a pained or strained smile, but a real smile.
I smiled back.
========================I have fallen asleep during the drive and awoke to Dean gently shaking my shoulder.
"Hey Cas, buddy, we're here. Wake up." His voice was gentle and I opened my eyes. It was the same smile.
Sam was already inside the building.
Dean opened the door of the car for me and we took each others hands. We walked inside and the air smelled amazing.
Not only did it smell nice, it looked it as well.
Decorations from the past lined the shelves, vintage Coca Cola products danced along the counters. Cute little ice cream dishes laid about. It truly was a place for delight.
Sam walked up to us with his Moose Tracks ice cream, smiled, then went to get a table.
Dean and I walked up to the counter to order our dairy delights. I ordered Vanilla while Dean ordered Chocolate.
Sam left us be when he finished his. He ate that ice cream entirely to quickly, but I wasn't to question it.
Dean and I bantered while we locked at the frozen treat. But then, Dean smeared some chocolate on my nose by accident. He then licked it off of my face.
"Dean! I do not appreciate your saliva on my nose. It is unsanitary! Do you know how fragile humans are and how susceptible that are to disease!"
"This saliva?" He then proceeded to lick my neck. I was outraged, but Dean's goofy attitude made it hard to stay mad. I'm retaliating force, I flung my ice cream at Dean and we ended up in an ice cream battle.
The owner started yelling and we ran out and back to the car. We laughed, covered in ice cream and happy. Sam smiled at us. The sun smiled at us. Dean smiled at me. I smiled at Dean.
"I love you Castiel."
"I love you too Dean."
