Nita had always been somewhat of an empath.
At a young age, the girl displayed traits of compassion and sympathy. Four year old Nita cried when her neighborhood friend fell off his bike, scraping his hands and knees. Six year old Nita was the first to give the shy new girl in her first grade class a friendly smile. Eight year old Nita would get angry at the bullies who made fun of the less fortunate kids in school and was always there to comfort them afterwords.
Nita had always been the one to calm down her father when he'd go on a furious rampage, expressing her love and understanding, her emotions far more developed than any regular primary schooler.
It was her ability to understand the feelings and thoughts of others that made her so likable. It was her never ending compassion that made students all want to be her friend. It was her harmonious and nonviolent ways with her classmates that earned her the superlative "Class Peacemaker" when she graduated from fifth grade.
It was her harmonious and nonviolent ways that made her vulnerable to the monsters.
It was her never ending compassion that made her father realize how much danger his beloved daughter was in.
It was her ability to understand the feelings and thoughts of others that kept her from questioning why her father insisted she pack her things and get in the car that one night.
It kept her from objecting as he drove two thousand miles from Miami to Long Island.
It kept her from resenting her father all those years after he'd left her at Camp Half-Blood.
