I ran as fast as I could up the hill, panting. I whipped my head behind me to see if the...the things were still following me. Unfortunately for me, they were. They looked like some type of skeletal warriors, and there were a lot of them. I dodged a flying spear and continued up the hill. I neared what looked like a...strawberry field? I huffed and powered my way up towards it, figuring it would give me more cover and more of a fighting chance than out in the open, like I was.
Suddenly, a boy wearing black skinny jeans and a black band t-shirt stepped out of the fields. I looked around, wondering where he could've come from.
"Get behind me!" the dark-haired boy yelled.
"What about you?" I screamed back.
He smirked. "Trust me, I can take care of myself."
I sighed and skidded to a halt behind the olive-skinned boy. The skeletons still approached, but now they were more hesitant. It was like they were...afraid. Of this boy. I didn't think too much of it. I'd seen some weird stuff before, and this wasn't much different.
"STAY AWAY!" the boy bellowed.
The skeletons stopped and trembled slightly. They then seemed to gather up their courage, and continued to advance towards us.
"I SAID, 'STAY AWAY'!" The boy thrust out his hands and a fissure opened in the ground under the skeletal warriors. They fell through and the fissure closed up once more.
I looked at the boy with wide eyes. He had his hands on his knees and was panting heavily. He looked up at me and gave me a small smile.
"How did you...what...wh-what just happened?"
The boy laughed. "Here," he put his hand on the small of my back and guided me towards the strawberry fields, "Let's get you to camp first."
My head was spinning. I decided not to ask questions. This boy seemed nice enough, he saved me, after all. But where was he taking me?
We passed a large pine tree with what looked a woolen fleece made of pure gold hanging from the branches. The fleece shone in the afternoon sun, winking at me. When I turned back to the boy, I noticed something. A camp, like the boy said, with campers milling around. Some were playing basketball, some were sword fighting in an arena, others were practicing archery, and still others were talking and laughing in what looked like a dining hall.
I was snapped out of my thoughts when a tall boy jogged up to us. He had curly blond hair, brilliantly blue eyes, and freckles dotting the bridge of his nose and under his eyes. He wore blue jeans and a bright orange t-shirt with the letters CHB written across the chest.
"Hey, Will," the dark-haired boy said. "Could you do me a favor and take her to the Big House? I need to go lie down in the infirmary."
"Sure, Nico," Will replied.
"Thanks."
Nico made his way towards a building, which I assumed was the infirmary. Will began to lead me towards what Nico called the "Big House."
"Hi, I'm Will," he stated cheerfully. "What's your name?"
"K-Kai-Kaitlyn," I managed to stutter.
"Nice to meet you, Kaitlyn," Will said.
"Welcome to Camp Half-Blood!" I glanced at his shirt. Will blushed like he said something he shouldn't have. "I-I'll let Chiron explain the rest." I glanced up at him quizzically. "You'll see," he sighed.
We walked up the steps and across the porch to the door of the house. Will pushed it open, gesturing at me to go first.
"Chiron?" Will called. Oddly enough, the sound of hooves responded to Will's call. I looked up to see a creature, half man, half horse, trotting through a door opposite the one we just came through.
"Will? Is that you?" the centaur replied. He stopped when he saw me. "Ah, I see. And who might this be?" he asked.
"Chiron, this is Kaitlyn. She just came in," Will explained.
Chiron nodded. "Now, Kaitlyn, before I explain everything, I'd like to ask you about what happened leading up to your arrival here?"
"I...um, well...I was dri-"
That's when I passed out.
