Students were flooding out the door as i began collecting my things and carelessly shoving them into my bag. Same old, same old. School, home, dinner, bed. Have you ever felt as though you were meant for something more? I feel myself hopelessly wishing for an adventure, a little drama. Something different. But right now, im stuck here.
I start for the door as Camille comes sprinting into the room, bashing into me causing my bag to slip off of my shoulder.
'Camille? What the hell! I was just coming to meet you!' I exclaimed, confused as i pulled my bag back up.
'Did you see the news! Superheroes! SUPERHEROES!' She shouted, pushing her phone in my face.
I took her phone and was in disbelief. Superheroes in Los Angeles? It cant be! I scrolled through the news story, staring wide-eyed at the screen.
'We have to find out more about these people!' I said passing her the phone.
'Come on, you can stay at mine. We have some work to do!' Said Camille and we left for her house.
I realise you have no idea who i am. I'm Nora O'Brien. Im 18 years old and still in High School with my best friend Camille. We dont have many friends, its practically just us, but i never feel alone. I may have a tiny little obsession with superheroes. I've always dreamed of going to Manhattan to see The Avengers in action. Looks like im a little closer to the action than i thought.***********************************
As we jumped off the school bus, we sprinted inside to begin our research. Camille's dad was at work so we had the place to ourselves. I tossed my bag on the floor by Camille's bed and joined her at the desk. We found hardly anything on them, only where they had been seen. Camille shut the laptop and sunk back into her chair.
'Well that was pointless' She said, clearly disappointed.
'Come on, lets go out for a bit. Fresh air could be good for us. We have been in here for... 5 HOURS! Oh my god, how has it been that long!' I said in astonishment.
'Really! Yeah, sure. It'd be nice to go for a walk.' She said picking up her phone and waddling to the door.
'Cheer up!' I said, giving her a small hug from behind.
We walked for what seemed like miles, talking, gossiping, laughing. We worked our way downtown and looked out at the desolate street.
'Wait, why is it so quiet?' I asked, suddenly questioning my surroundings.
'Urm, it is half 11 at night Nora!'
'Exactly! Where is everyone? The people drinking? The people that work late. LA doesnt die at night!' I said looking at the dark streets, the blackened buildings, it was like looking at a completely different universe.
Suddenly there was a loud crash, a bright light flashed from around the corner, illuminating the sky and casting a large, eerie, terrifying shadow across the road. I looked at Camille in shock, as countless car alarms simultaneously began wailing, filling my head with the awful noise. I ran towards it, with some newly found bravery. God knows where that came from! As i reached the corner, i turned revealing a huge, disgusting, horrifying creature almost the size of one of the skyscapers. I froze in fear. So much for that bravery. But as quickly as i saw the creature, i saw them.
'Oh my god! Its them!' I heard Camille utter under her breath.
We stood there watching, in awe and fear. They were amazing. Everything i ever dreamed of seeing.
Eventually the creature came crashing down. As the team re-grouped, Camille and I hid around the corner so they didnt see us.
'Did you see where he went?' One said
'I was a little preoccupied with that sexy beast behind you' said another, pointing at the monster.
'He's got to be around here somewhere' chimed one more.
'Hello there' exclaimed a voice from behind me. It was husky, deep, kind of creepy really. Definately not Camille.
I span around, thinking that it may have been one of the heroes who caught us watching.
'I'm so sorry! We.. We'll go. That was amazing by the way!' I spat out nervously as i grabbed Camilles arm and started to walk away.
'No, please. If you thought that was good, you're gonna want to see this.' He replied. He creepily winked at me, then walked towards the rest of the group.
I looked at Camille who seemed just as in shock as me!
'Well that was creepy' i said spinning around to watch them once again.
'They do say not to meet your idols. It sets you up for disaster!' She replied, coming up beside me for a better view.
'Bravo. Braaavvo.' Said the creepy guy.
Its kind of hard to commentate when you dont know their names so creepy guy is going to have to do.
'Give it up Stern' shouted one of the heroes.
'Give it up? I'm winning! Especially when i have this!' He said pulling out a sharp, rather mean looking blade.
'How did.. Where did you find that?' One of the heroes exclaimed.
'Hardly important. Besides, why tell you? You'll be dead any second!' He ran towards them, reaching metres from them then propelling himself into the air.
'I dont think he's one of the good guys' Camille whispered.
'That would explain the creepy wink' i added.
They were fighting, it seemed quite even if im honest. It was frustrating really. Come on! I wanted to cheer them on, hell i wanted to help, but thats just a one way ticket to death.
Suddenly, the bad guy, Stern, was thrown to the ground. Like INTO the ground. He left a gigantic hole in the road were he landed. I wouldnt want to piss of the guy who threw him! The heroes grabbed the blade while he was down. One was messing with it, making it glow. It almost looked like it was cracking.
I looked back at the creeper who was buried in the road to find him staring at me. His eyes glowing a deep purple.
'Urm Camille. You know you said he was the bad guy.' I said starting to step back.
'Yeah..' she replied anxiously, watching me walk backwards.
'Well, that means that the bad guy knows we're here..' i said, not taking my eyes off his.
'Lets go' i said quickly, grabbing her hand and spinning around to run.
As quickly as i turned he was there, staring into my eyes. I froze in terror. I tried to scream but nothing happened.
He grabbed my neck and hoisted me up into the air. He flew to the middle of the road and landed hard on the ground.
'Give me the blade!' He screamed, squeezing my neck tighter.
'Or she dies' he finished. On that note, i began struggling. Trying to force my way out of his hold.
'Give it to him' said one of the heroes to his fellow team member.
They rolled the blade towards us and it knocked into his foot and came to a stop just beneath us.
He released my throat from his grip and i fell to the floor. I instantly held my hand to my neck, gasping for air. I couldnt stop my gaze from drifting to the blade. It was cracking, pulsating with light. It was.. beautiful.
'NO!' Stern screamed, as he picked up the blade.
'YOU BROKE IT! YOU RUINED MY BLADE!' He yelled, rather dramatically might i add.
Nevertheless, i was petrified so i scrambled to my feet and started towards the heroes.
Suddenly, i couldnt move. There was a sharp, intense pain in my back, through to my stomach. I looked down to see blood on my hands and my shirt.
'NO!' shouted one of the heroes.
I looked up in time to see three of the heroes attack him and one run towards me.
My knees went weak and my arms felt heavy. I fell to the ground but was caught by a hero. Trying my best to keep myself awake, i coughed up blood and felt my eyelids get heavy. I heard Camille scream my name in horror. Then, everything went dark.
