Recap…

“Why were you crying though?” he prompted, resting his arms on his knees.

I looked down at the ground. “I’ll tell you later.” What there was to say was not something I wanted to talk about at the moment. Remembering that I also had a question of my own, I lifted my head. “Did those guys say what they wanted from you?”

He chuckled before responding. “I’ll tell you later.”

I smiled as I realised he purposely used my exact words. Alright, later it is, then.

CHAPTER 10

Pulling the shoelace of my sneaker into a tight knot, I rested my sports bag against the wall. I faced the mirror, my own reflection becoming clearer as I sauntered forward. Underneath each of my eyes was a thick line of dark grey where evidence of weariness made itself apparent.

Using the plain elastic hair tie from around my wrist, I pulled the dark curls on my head into a neat ponytail, letting a couple of strands rest on either sides of my face.

From my right, Jess tapped me enthusiastically on the shoulder. “Let’s go,” she said, heading for the door. She led me into the gym, over to the corner where several people in our class were standing, chatting quietly among themselves whilst awaiting the teacher.

Once Ms Kennedy came, we were to collect a volleyball each from the sports shed. I walked alongside Daniel to the shed while Jess talked to Katy from behind.

“Catch, Avery,” Daniel shouted, throwing me a ball unexpectedly.

With my body half asleep, the ball escaped my hands as soon as it made contact with the tip of my fingers. A groan escaped my lips, but I smiled at Daniel nonetheless. “Thanks for that.”

He chuckled, seemingly amused. “You look dead today.”

I exhaled a long sigh, walking over to the side of the shed without commenting on his statement. During the past few nights, I couldn’t help but think about what had happened almost a week ago. Master Josh and I haven’t really spoken much, so he hasn’t told me about what was going on between him and those guys yet.

I haven’t told him about my mother either. After a few days, I couldn’t even decide if I should tell him about it. I mean, would he even care?

Suddenly, I heard voices, definitely from a group of people who didn’t belong to my class. Despite the curiosity, I ignored it, bending down to pick up the ball that had bounced away.

Without warning, the second door to the sports shed opened, banging me on the head. I grunted quietly, falling to the ground from my crouching position.

I heard a gasp of surprise. “Whoa, sorry! Are you okay?”

My head lifted up to make eye contact with a tall, blonde girl who was a year level higher than me. We didn’t know each other in person, but I knew her name was Katherine Weller. Everyone knew her. She was beautiful, giving her the reason to be well-known in our school. “I’m alright,” I responded, my voice half stuck in my throat as I got to my feet.

She smiled briefly before turning away, hand in hand with a boy who I didn't quite see. The next few people to come in were Master Josh and a friend of his. He eyed me with surprise, then concern. “Are you hurt?”

I shook my head. “Not at all,” I answered with only a quarter of honesty in it. There was no reason why a great person like him should be worried about a girl like me.
