lea | alec
THE NEW YORK cold washes through Lea's face as she pulls her coat closer, embracing the warmth of her skin. It takes her mere seconds to realize that the sky above her was starting to get darker. Her legs feel numb inside her brown boots, that she got as a Christmas present from her mother last year.
She opens her umbrella and precariously plays with it by twirling it in the stem like a little kid in the rain. Tiny drops of water start to pour above her head but she's protected by the transparent material that she holds.
The road is desolate, she realizes and she admires the quietness and the numbness of the weather. With a bag being held in a hand, she starts to hum her favorite song that she once discovered through the radio.
All of a sudden, she's interrupted when a guy wearing a large coat - large enough to cover his whole body - wraps her waist. The hold on her skin grows tighter and her mouth opens to scream.
She drops her umbrella to the ground harshly such that it produces a ringing sound in her ears. Fear and rain soak her body wholly and she feels her heart stutter between her chest loudly. She gathers her energy in her right arm to throw a punch in his stomach and eventually, hears him scream.
She starts to run away but there's no sign of people walking by; street lights are glowing in the dark and all the other doors around her are closed. Before she starts to realize that he's chasing her, she picks up her phone and calls Carrie.
She mutters under her breath when she hears the call go straight to voicemail. Without wasting another minute, she opens her inbox and types a message to the first contact she could see.
someone's chasing me. i need help.
lea, what's going on?
alec?
She silently scolds herself for being stupid and scrolls through her inbox to find Carrie's name. She hears her name being yelled by the man who's searching for her. Panic drives through her nerves as she wonders how he knows her name.
Shaking herself from thoughts, she types another message to both Carrie and Leighton when she receives another message from Alec.
what the hell is going on? where are you?
i came here to buy a few things and then it started to rain and suddenly i'm being attacked.
how are you typing?
go find the nearest building you could see and hide.
i'm calling 911.
She confines herself in a dark alleyway. The smell of rotten food and something else that she doesn't want to think about enters into her nostrils. Her eyes oscillate back and forth to see if he was still chasing her. Her body shivers partly due to the cold and partly due to fright that consumes her. She inhales, pulling in a deep breath and orders herself to stay strong.
All of a sudden, she releases a breath of relief as her eyes spot a familiar face running towards her direction.
Connor.
His coat sweeps a circle in the air as he rotates his body to locate her in the rain. Immediately, she stands up from the ground and feels the energy revisit her body. His eyes smile when they meet hers but instantly, close shut in pain when he's welcomed with a punch on his stomach.
"Shit, woman!" He cries. "What the hell?"
"How can you scare me like that?"
"I was trying to surprise you, Lea," he smiles despite the pain on his face.
"I called 911, for heaven's sake! Never do that again," she screams and eventually calms down as he pulls her into an embrace. She swallows the lump in her throat and the air around her starts to get thick, allowing her to breathe.
"I'm sorry. I'll remind myself to never do it again," he rubs his hand in the small of her back. His touch brings her warmth and a restrained smile of nostalgia stretches from her lips.
"You better," she responds and throws her arms around his shoulder to reciprocate the gesture. "I missed you," she mumbles slowly, but it is clear enough for him to understand.
"I missed you too," he says and the warmth of his skin travels into her body. They stay that way, wrapped in the silence of the winds and in each other's arms but one thing interrupts them: the sound of a notification that vibrates through Lea's coat pocket.
"Just a minute," she says and removes from him.
are the police there?
where are you now?
why aren't you replying?
Lea slaps her forehead as her eyes move around to read the messages.
i'm fine now. he was a friend. he said he wanted to surprise me.
oh god.
seriously, i'm starting to question your taste in friends.
i know. he's kinda spontaneous so i freaked out. the street was desolate and what was I supposed to do? i didn't want to be kidnapped or god forbid, murdered without letting someone know.
thanks to you, you weren't kidnapped. the police would be over at my house.
i'm really sorry for freaking you out.
now that you're safe, i can finally go back to work.
studying, again?
yes.
sorry for making you go through that.
you were frightened. it's fine.
thank you.
:)
