THE FAINT SMILE ON Adrienne Walker's face welcomes Lea as she brings her hands to give her daughter a bone-crushing hug.
"Mom," Lea breathes. "I missed you," she breaks the silence around them whilst being engulfed in her mother's arms. "So much."
Her mother's eyes wrinkle in the sides and her lips lift to produce a lopsided smile. She brings her hands to brush a few strands of Lea's dark brown locks and tucks it behind her ears. "Honey, how have you been? How are things?"
A blush creeps its way into Lea's cheeks as a shy smile escapes from her lips. "A-actually there's something I need to tell you." She gestures her mother to take the seat beneath the tree and wraps her arms in hers. Gulping, she leaves a heavy sigh and smiles. "I met a guy," she adds.
Her mother's eyes widen in surprise. "Honey, that's great! Tell me everything."
"His name's Alec Hawthorne," she says. Her eyelids flutter at the sound of his name and a red color paints her cheeks. "He's just amazing." She sighs dramatically.
Her mother nods her head asking her to continue.
"It's actually rather a strange story, Mom. I got to know him accidentally but somehow we're here," she shrugs.
"That's amazing, baby. Glad to know things are good with you," her mother rubs her palm. Lea watches her eyes smile but there's something different, sad, that she didn't quite realize minutes ago.
"Is everything okay, Mom?" She inquires immediately without giving herself a moment of thought. "You look tired," she adds, noticing the dark circles around her eyes.
"M-me?" Her mother shivers at first but shrugs later. "I'm fine. Just caught up with work, that's all."
"How's Ben?" She asks with an enthusiastic smile on her face.
"B-Ben," her mother stammers. "He's fine. Good."
Lea licks her chapped lips and observes the change of expression on her mother's face. She doesn't miss her swollen eyes and the dark color surrounding it. "Okay," she replies nevertheless.
"Do you want to grab lunch, Lea? I'm starving," her mother sums up. "Traveling is hectic work, phew."
"Sure," Lea smiles. "I'm starving too! I know a great place nearby. Feeling Italian?"
Her mother smiles. "Italian, it is."
All of a sudden, Lea feels her phone vibrate inside her bag. It takes a few seconds to hunt it from the pile of stuff and her face, instantly, glows with joy as her eyes read Alec's name with a red heart next to it.
She looks at her mother apologetically, telling her that she has to take the call and her mother nods in approval. Shooting a kind smile at her, she attends the call, a sense of joy flushing through her insides.
"Hey, Alec! What's up?" she asks.
"Babe, I want to know where you are right now. Like right now," his deep voice echoes in her ears, driving her crazy. There's an excitement lacing his voice and for some reason, it causes her to flinch in excitement too.
"I'm out with my mom. Why do you ask?"
"I-I," he stammers. She waits for him to continue whilst hearing him clear his throat. "I drove Bash to New York so I thought, I'd stop by."
"Alec," Lea chuckles heartily. "Bash took the train yesterday."
"Okay, fine," he pouts in embarrassment. She could almost picture the way his face blushed. "Yes, I wanted to see you. So I drove myself."
"Aren't you a cute little thing?" she smiles and blushes furiously.
She wraps her hand around her mother's to lead her across the road and her eyes oscillate right and left precautiously. A wave of cold air flushes through her skin and she pulls her coat closer.
"Babe, we've discussed this. Cute is not a-"
"Lea, watch out!" she hears her mother scream from behind and her head instantly rotates to meet a black SUV that crawls towards her in a swift motion causing her to drop her phone to the ground.
"Fuck," she yells and suddenly everything in the world is a blur.
