A Night Without Sleep

When you are old

And I am old

And asleep one night

While the star songs keep you awake

Reach for this poem

And remember the love of youth

Remember a young man still grasping

His childhood with one hand

And a maiden with brown-red locks

And eyes like fire for you

Remember the love of middleness

When children and hardship multiply

And joy sings from every stone

Remember the loud days, the long ones

The simple joys, and fresh, fiery tears

Look now, remember, the times a bit beyond

When your children are grown

And theirs are the next to be born

Don't remember for my sake, remember for yours

Love's youthful innocence

Which only shines brighter when unfulfilled

Ungrown and young, like the infant rose
