We were sitting in the back of a APC waiting to be redeployed to the front line that passes through the city of Alexandria. All of us just sat in silence waiting to arrive at the drop point.
We could hear the conflict from within the transport. We should arrive soon.
I messed with the dog tags I had around my neck. they had my name and rank on them Sgt alex Thompson. I looked around at the soldiers. Most nodded at me as looked at them but one just sat there with his head in his hands. "What's up with him" I asked the soldier next to him. He shrugged and tapped his shoulder. He looked at him then at me. "Something wrong?" I ask. He shook his head "no sir. Just a bit nervous."he repliedSoon after we felt the transport stop I stood up and gathered the soldiers attention. "The moment the ramp drops all of you need to run into the trench and report directly to your commanding officers!" They all stood up and replied "Yes sir!" I turned to face the ramp. A green light flickered on and the ramp lowered.
As soon as it was low enough I jumped out of the APC and ran to the nearest cover. Bullets filled the air as troops poured out of the 20 or so transports that littered the field. I watched as many of them ran directly for the trench, many were killed as a result of this, and the others hid behind cover, like me, and waited for the salvos of bullets to become less frequent.
As I waited for the opportunity to advance the transports retreated. Then the gunfire was no longer focused on us and more on the trench. I quickly ran towards it ducking behind any cover i could find. I noticed that I wasn't getting shot at and beckoned the troops behind me to run into the trench. As we ran towards the trench we were spotted by a cazador gunship. My blood ran cold as it's spotlight stopped on us and we stopped and looked for cover.
The gunship opened fire on us ripping though the group of men behind me with it's dual vulcan cannons. I sprinted towards a half destroyed cottage and hoped it didn't spot me. Its spotlight passed over the building. I sighed in relief thinking it had not seen me. But I was proven wrong when a 80mm round hit the cottage ripping it apart. I guess I was lucky to survive that but the derby it created had stabbed into me causing huge amounts of pain. The gunship eventually left after gunning down a few more of our soldiers.
I got up and staggered into the trench and looked around for a medic. When I found one he took me into a large bunker filled with injured men. He sat me down on a cot and examined my wounds. He pulled out the shrapnel and rubbed a gel over the wounds in order to seal them. I thanked him and asked him to tell my commander I was there. He nodded and left.
